UAB Men’s Soccer Adds App State Transfer Mason Robicheaux to Roster

BIRMINGHAM – Head Coach Jeff Kinney added another solid piece to his 2020 class with the signing of Appalachian State standout Mason Robicheaux on Monday morning.

Robicheaux comes to Birmingham after two seasons at App State, including an impressive sophomore campaign where he started all 19 matches for the Mountaineers and was named to the Sun Belt All-Tournament Team. As a defender, he led all non-goalkeepers in minutes played with 1,405 in 2019. Robicheaux scored twice, both game winning goals including the game winner against Howard in the first round of the Sun Belt tournament. As an anchor on the back line, he helped the Mountaineers to four shutouts last season as App State finished 2019 with 11 wins.

On May 26, Appalachian State Athletics announced it would be cutting three programs due to COVID-19 financial restraints, including the men’s soccer program. Due to the circumstances, Robicheaux will be eligible to play immediately for the Blazers.

“It is always disheartening when a program gets cut, especially when it is one on the rise like Appalachian State,” said Kinney. “They had a great coaching staff in place and were going to be a team to reckon with for years to come. Mason was a big piece to their successful growth these past few years and I have no doubt he will bring that same mentality to UAB. We are excited to welcome him to the family!”

Robicheuax, a Mandeville, La. native, played prep soccer at St. Paul’s School where he helped lead his team to two state championships and a No. 1 national ranking. He will be reunited with former Northshore United club soccer teammate Brandon Core.

The signing of Robicheaux marks the 13th new addition to the UAB roster for Coach Kinney. He will be joined by Issah Hamidu, Mayno Linares, Owen Travis, Heath Flathau, Andrew Strait, Hugo Backman, Cale Loughrey, Tyrell Price, Caelen Whitehead, Miguel Hernandez, Santiago Herrera and Dillon Gee in Birmingham this fall. Flathau and Linares were named Gatorade High School Players of the Year Monday.
