UAB Men’s Basketball Player Positional Profiles: Wings

BIRMINGHAM – As the 2020-21 men’s basketball season approaches, UABSports.com will provide the fans with a weekly positional preview. Today focusing on the wings.

“The wings for this season are our most versatile and experienced position group,” said head coach Andy Kennedy. “From Tavin Lovan and Tyreek Scott-Grayson back as double-figure scorers from last season, to the addition of Quan Jackson and Michael Ertel who can play on or off the ball giving us versatility in how we attack from the perimeter. We also added Tony Toney in the freshman class who is another option from the wing positions.”

Lovan, who went from 7.1 to 13.0 points per game from his freshman to sophomore season, was UAB’s leading scorer last season. He scored in double figures in 24 contests – four of those were 20+ point games – including a career-high 25-point effort on 10-of-11 shooting against Middle Tennessee. Additionally, he scored 14 points against #15 Memphis on 6-of-8 from the field. He was the only Blazer to start all 32 games.

In Conference USA play, Lovan averaged 14.7 points per game, which was tied for 11th best in the league. He registered double-figure scoring in 15 of the 18 C-USA regular season games.

Toney led Mae Jemison to a 25-3 record and the Alabama High School Athletic Association 6A Area 16 title as well as a berth in the 2020 AHSAA Boys Basketball State Championship Sub-Regional Round. He averaged 16.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.4 steals per game.

The Huntsville native was a 2020 Alabama Sports Writers Association First-Team All-State selection, a Super All-State Third-Team selection as well as a finalist for Class 6A Player of the Year. Additionally, Toney was voted the Tennessee Valley Player of the Year, MVP of both the N2 Hoops Tournament and the Huntsville City Classic and played in the Alabama/Mississippi All-Star game.

He was the number three ranked player in Alabama for the Class of 2020.

Ertel, Jackson and Scott-Grayson will also be used as primary ball handlers as profiled last week here
