UAB MBB Opponent Preview: Southern/Chattanooga


BIRMINGHAM –
 The 2020-21 UAB men’s basketball season features nine non-conference contests along with 18 Conference USA games. This week UABSports.com will preview each of UAB’s non-conference opponents for the upcoming season, with today featuring Southern (Dec. 16) and Chattanooga (Dec. 19).

SOUTHERN QUICK FACTS:
Location: Baton Rouge, La.
2019-20 Record: 17-15
2019-20 SWAC Record: 13-5, 2nd
Head Coach: Sean Woods
Record at Southern: 24-39 / 3rd season
Career record: 151-190

THE SERIES:
UAB leads the series 5-0 against Southern. The initial game was on December 8, 1990 that resulted in a 107-83 win for the Blazers.

SOUTHERN AT A GLANCE:
Southern finished last season as one of the hottest teams in the country before the coronavirus pandemic ended the season prematurely. The Jaguars won 14 of their last 16 games to finish with a record of 17-15 and 13-5 in conference.  Redshirt senior guard Ahsante Shivers (9.5 ppg) and graduate senior guard Micah Bradford (8.8 ppg) were named to the Preseason All-SWAC Second Team.
DID YOU KNOW?
The last time UAB and Southern faced each other in 2016 resulted in a 75-74 overtime win for the Blazers at Bartow Arena

CHATTANOOGA QUICK FACTS:
Location: Chattanooga, Tenn.
2019-20 Record: 20-13
2019-20 SoCon Record: 10-8, T-5th
Head Coach: Lamont Paris
Record at Chattanooga: 42-56 / 4th season
Career record: Same

THE SERIES:
UAB leads the series 11-3 against Chattanooga. The initial game was on December 30 1981 in which UAB won 76-50 at the BJCC Arena. The last game between the two teams was on November 13 2017. UAB won that game 89-47 at Bartow Arena.

CHATTANOOGA AT A GLANCE:
Head coach Lamont Paris has turned the Chattanooga basketball program in another direction. Last season, he posted a 20-13 record in which is a 10 game turnaround from his first season in 2017. Chattanooga returns their third leading scorer, David Jean-Baptiste (12.6 ppg) 

DID YOU KNOW?
UAB freshman Terrell Ard Jr. and Chattanooga junior Trey Doomes were teammates at Allatoona High School in Acworth, Ga.


All UAB men’s basketball season ticket holders who completed their purchase by October 19 were able to be accommodated within the social distancing reallocation for the 2020-21 season. A limited number of season tickets remain in the upper level and can be purchased on a first come, first served basis. For those interested in season tickets, please fill out the season ticket request form or contact the UAB Ticket Office at 205-975-8221. A member of the UAB Athletics Ticket Sales and Service team will follow up with you regarding available seating options.

As a reminder, original season ticket locations from the men’s basketball priority seat allocation will be utilized for 2021-22 renewals or if capacity restrictions change during the 2020-21 season.
