UAB Hosts Tuskegee in Final Nonconference Game of the Season
BIRMINGHAM – After a week-long break from play the Blazers return home for the first time since Dec. 3 to host Tuskegee in the final nonconference game of the season.
UAB (7-4) left New Orleans on a high note defeating Texas Southern in the Tulane Classic before the holiday break. The Blazers put up a strong performance against undefeated (RV) Colorado, taking the Buffs into overtime off 19 points from Rachael Childress and 17 points from Miyah Barnes. In the win over Texas Southern, Katelynn Thomas dropped a season-high 24 points and Childress added 14 points and eight assists to her stat line. In the last three games Childress is averaging 19.3 points off 50.0 percent shooting from the field and 58.3 percent from beyond the arc.
Tuskegee (7-5) had won four straight games before its loss to Savannah State on Dec. 21. The Tigers are paced by India Blakely who leads the team in points per game (13.1), assists (72), assists per game (6.0) and steals (22). Tuskegee is averaging 69.3 points per game while allowing 67.1 points per game defensively.
“Tuskegee has a very athletic and talented team,” said head coach Randy Norton. “They are a team that won 20+ games last year. As our final nonconference game of the season it will be a great game and good preparation for conference play.”
The two teams have met on four previous occasions with Tuskegee leading the series 3-1. Each of the Tigers three wins came between 1978-1980. The last meeting between the teams in 2017 resulted in a 105-50 victory for the Blazers, their first win against Tuskegee which came at home in Bartow Arena.
Tickets purchased for the game which was originally scheduled for Dec. 29 will be honored for Dec. 30. Fans can stick around after the game to join in a New Year Eve Eve “countdown” to 2020.
