UAB Falls to Old Dominion 58-52

NORFOLK, Va. – In the long anticipated rematch of last year’s Conference USA semifinal game, Old Dominion outlasted UAB 58-52 on Saturday night.

Tyreek Scott-Grayson led the Blazers (9-6, 0-2 C-USA) with 11 points and seven rebounds. Kassim Nicholson added 11 points.

Kalu Ezikpe had a double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds and A.J. Oliver II scored12 points for the Monarchs (6-9, 2-0 C-USA).

UAB lead the majority of the first half, with their largest lead being six points after a Scott-Grayson 3-pointer at 5:07 that made the score 22-16. ODU would score the next nine points to go ahead 25-22 with 3:13 remaining. After the teams exchanged baskets, the Blazers got back-to-back 3-pointers from Jalen Benjamin and Nicholson, who called bank at the buzzer wich gave UAB a 30-27 halftime lead.

A Nicholson 3-pointer at 13:32 of the second half put UAB ahead by three points at 38-35. However, ODU would get back-to-back 3-pointers from Xavier Green and Joe Reece to regain the lead at 41-38. Two straight layups by Lovan gave the Blazers a one point lead at the midway point of the half, 42-41.

The Monarchs’ lead grew to seven points after Green made an and-1 to make the score 53-46 with 4:39 remaining. UAB battled back to make it a one point contest at 53-52 after a two Will Butler field goals and free throws fro Tavin Lovan and Scott-Grayson with 2:11 to play.

ODU held UAB scoreless from then on out as an Ezikpe basket and three foul shots down the stretch gave the Monarchs the victory.

As a team, the Blazers struggled from the free throw line, making only 5-of-15. After committing four turnovers in the first three minutes, UAB took care of the ball the rest of the way finishing with only 10 for the game.

Next up for the Blazers is WKU (9-5, 2-0 C-USA) on Thursday night at Bartow Arena. The Hilltoppers are coming off a 68-61 win over Rice.
