UAB Crowned SoCon Champion for Second Consecutive Season

STATESBORO, Ga. – With its conference championship victory on Sunday afternoon, the UAB rifle team claimed its second consecutive SoCon title, as well as its second in program history.

“I could not be more proud of these student-athletes and the way that they compete day in and day out,” head coach Lori Goodwin said. “This championship is a testament to how much effort they put in day in and day out. They are excellent representatives of our university as well as our program.”

The Green and Gold notched the top spot in the conference by shooting 4539 over the weekend, four points better than second-place North Georgia’s 4535. VMI rounded out the top-three, shooting 4490, while The Citadel and Wofford came in fourth and fifth, shooting 4478 and 4445, respectively.

Senior captain Lilly Vonderau paced the Blazers in air rifle on Sunday afternoon, shooting 579, with freshman Amy Kohan, who scored 577, right behind her. Sophia Flores (566), Zoe Lum (564) and Jordan Blankenship (558) rounded out Blazers who participated in Sunday’s action.

Vonderau and Kohan were named to the All-Southern Conference Air Rifle First Team. Kohan also took home Southern Conference Freshman of the Year hardware after her breakout first season as a Blazer. Blankenship was the final UAB team member to take home an award on Sunday, as she was honored with the Pinnacle Award, given to the student-athlete with the highest GPA on the championship-winning team.

“All of the awards that we took home on both Saturday and Sunday are great,” Goodwin said. “This was a true team win, though. Everyone stepped up when we needed it and we are thrilled to take the trophy back to Birmingham for the second year in a row.”
