UAB Baseball Travels to WKU for Weekend Series

BIRMINGHAM – Coming off a series win last weekend against No. 4 Southern Miss and a Tuesday night victory against Jacksonville State, the UAB baseball team returns to Conference USA play against WKU in Bowling Green, Ky. May 6-8.

Friday’s series opener and Saturday’s matchup now begin at 5 p.m. First pitch for Sunday’s game is at 1 p.m. The series will not be streamed, but fans call follow along with live stats here.  

With three Conference USA series remaining, the Blazers (26-17, 10-11 C-USA) are currently in eighth place in the league. UAB enters the weekend two games ahead of Marshall for the eighth and final spot in the 2022 Conference USA Championship played in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, from May 26-30.

Last weekend, UAB earned a series victory over No. 4 Southern Miss, winning the first two games of a three-game set at Young Memorial Field. The Blazers handed the Golden Eagles its first series loss in C-USA play and only its second weekend series loss of the season. Friday night’s 10-6 comeback victory snapped the Golden Eagles’ 15-game winning streak. This marked the Blazers’ first win over a top-five opponent since a 6-5 victory against No. 5 Rice on May 13, 2012.

Saturday’s 3-2 win over USM was UAB’s first series win over a top-five opponent since May 14-16, 2009, against No. 4 Rice. It also improved the Blazers’ record to 12-5 in one-run games this season.

On Tuesday night, a five-run eighth inning propelled UAB to a 7-1 victory at Jacksonville State and improved the Blazers’ non-conference record to 16-6.

WKU has lost 12 of its last 13 contests and is coming off a series at Rice where it dropped two-of-three. Currently, the Hilltoppers are tied for 11th place in C-USA with a 5-16 league record.

The UAB/WKU series began on March 8, 1981. WKU leads the all-time series 37-32 and holds a 22-13 advantage in games played in Bowling Green. The Hilltoppers swept the last series against the Blazers in 2019 and have won eight of the last 11 games played. The teams met 51 times as members of the Sun Belt Conference, with WKU holding a 28-23 advantage.
