‘Tugas topple Cardinals with four-hit shutout, 3-0

Chase Petty, Dennis Boatman, and Owen Holt combine on Daytona’s eighth blanking of the year

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — RHP Chase Petty induced three more double plays — giving him a Florida State League-leading 10 on the year — while RHP Dennis Boatman and RHP Owen Holt permitted only two baserunners out of the bullpen. The trio led the Daytona Tortugas to a shutout over the Palm Beach Cardinals, 3-0, in front of 1,788 fans at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Sunday evening.

The Tortugas (8-15, 37-51) wasted no time jumping in front, as 3B Austin Callahan (2-4, R, SO) ripped a single on the first pitch of the bottom of the first. CF Jay Allen II (1-2, R) followed with a knock of his own before both runners moved to second and third on a wild pitch.

After a strikeout, DH Hayden Jones (1-4, R, RBI, SO) smacked a sharp grounder to short. With the infield in, the ball deflected off the shortstop’s mitt and rolled behind him. All three runners were safe and Jones was credited with an RBI single, giving Daytona a 1-0 lead.

Following another wild pitch and a strikeout that put runners at second and third, 1B Yassel Pino (0-3, 2 SO) smashed a ground ball to third. The throw across the diamond was spiked in the dirt and kicked up the first-base line. Two runs scored on the miscue, propelling the Tortugas to a 3-0 advantage.

That was more than enough cushion for Daytona’s pitching. Petty (4.0 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 2 SO) worked around three hits and a pair of walks to induce a trio of twin-killings, ultimately receiving a no-decision.

Boatman (2.1 IP, BB, 3 SO) took over in the fifth and retired the first seven men he faced, leaving after permitting a one-out walk in the seventh. The Roseville, Calif. native was awarded his third win of the year for his efforts.

Holt (2.2 IP, H, 2 SO) snagged the reins from there and needed just four pitches to end the seventh. The 23-year-old retired the first seven batters he faced before yielding a two-out double in the ninth. Holt stood firm, though, and kept the shutout intact, producing a weak ground ball to second to close out Daytona’s 3-0 win and his third save of the season.

RHP Trent Baker (0.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, ER, 2 BB, 2 SO) — coming off a career-high 10 strikeouts in his last start before the All-Star break for Palm Beach (14-10, 44-44) — struggled on Sunday. The Angelo State alum could not escape the opening frame and was saddled with his seventh defeat.

Following the league-wide off day on Monday, the Tortugas will pack up for a two-week road trip, starting with a six-game series against the Jupiter Hammerheads, the Florida State League affiliate of the Miami Marlins, starting on Tuesday evening. Neither team has announced a probable starter for the series opener.
