Tortugas and Hammerheads suspended on Tuesday

Game to be completed at 5 p.m. on Wednesday; seven-inning nightcap to follow

JUPITER, Fla. — Once more on the road, Mother Nature interrupted America’s pastime. After a 44-minute delay, Tuesday’s matchup between the Daytona Tortugas and Jupiter Hammerheads was suspended prior to the start of the top of the third inning due to unplayable field conditions at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.

The game will resume at 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday evening with Jupiter holding a 3-2 lead. 3B Austin Callahan (1-1, R) will be at the plate for the Tortugas (8-15, 37-51) with the bases empty and nobody out in the top of the third inning. Following the completion of Tuesday’s nine-inning game, there will be a roughly 35-minute break and then a seven-inning nightcap will be played.

Daytona scooted out to an early advantage prior to the weather’s interruption. Callahan ignited the ballgame with a leadoff single and, two batters later, C Hayden Jones (1-1, R, HR, 2 RBI) deposited a home run out by the St. Louis Cardinals’ offices beyond the right-field wall. The Huntertown, Ind. native’s fifth blast of the season placed the Tortugas in front, 2-0.

Jupiter (12-12, 46-42) took charge right before the game was halted in the bottom of the second. The Hammerheads loaded the bases on singles from 1B Zach Zubia (1-1, R) and RF Jorge Caballero (1-1, R), plus a walk to 3B Carlos Santiago (0-0, R, BB) with one out before LF Tanner Allen (0-0, RBI) was drilled to chase home a run.

A fielder’s choice off the bat of DH Angeudis Santos (0-1, RBI) knotted the game at two for Jupiter. SS Yiddi Cappe (1-2, RBI) smashed a single into right to chase in another tally to grab the advantage for the Hammerheads, 3-2.

Daytona’s RHP Julian Aguiar (2.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, SO) and Jupiter’s RHP Edgar Sánchez (2.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 SO) each had one strong and laborious frame before the rain and lightning arrived.

RHP Javi Rivera (2-2, 3.06) is projected to make the start for the Tortugas in game two. The Hammerheads are scheduled to counter with LHP Sandro Bargallo (1-2, 3.29). Coverage on the Tortugas Radio Network will begin on the MiLB First Pitch app and www.daytonatortugas.com at 4:45 p.m. leading up to the 5:00 p.m. first pitch from Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.

The Tortugas will return to Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Tuesday, August 9, to open up a two-week homestand with six games against the Lakeland Flying Tigers, the Florida State League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. The series opens with another Shell Yeah Cookout. The $15 add-on includes the full “Bases Loaded” menu during a 90-minute buffet with hot dogs, hamburgers, pulled pork, baked beans, cookies, Pepsi products, and more. It is also a Breast Cancer Awareness Night presented by Radiology Associates Imaging. The Tortugas will don unique pink-clad uniforms that will be auctioned off at the end of the season with all proceeds to raise money and awareness in the fight against breast cancer. Silver Sluggers Night presented by Conviva is a part of the festivities. The exclusive 60-and-older club features deals at the team store and concession stands for members and more. The series opener also marks a Taco Tuesday with options at the concession stands starting at just $3.
