Tokyo 2020 Hopeful Kate Nye Headed to Weightlifting World Championships

OAKLAND TOWNSHIP, Michigan

(September 8,2019) — Kate Nye of Oakland Township will head to Pattaya, Thailand this week to represent Team USA at the 2019 World Weightlifting Championships, a critical qualifying event for next year’s Olympic Games. She leaves Michigan Wednesday September 11th for training camp ahead of the World Championships scheduled for September 18th – 27th.

Nye, a Tokyo 2020 hopeful trains at Team Hercules in Rochester Hills.
Relatively new to weightlifting, Nye has stunned the sport with record breaking performances on the international stage in 2019. She broke dozens of American and Pan American records as she captured the Pan American Champion title in Guatemala, then reset many of those records at the Junior World Championships in Fiji. Nye most recently represented Team USA at the Pan American Games in Peru where she won a bronze medal.
Prior to competing in Thailand, Nye will head to the 2020 Olympic City, Tokyo, for a training camp. There Nye will train with her fellow members of Team USA to become acclimated to the vast time difference from the United States so they can perform at their best.

USA Weightlifting will have staff on hand in Tokyo and Pattaya to cover the World Championships and training camp. If you’re interested in interviewing Nye before, during or after the World Championships, please let us know at usaw@usaweightlifting.org or kelsey.kennedy@usaweightlifting.org and we would be happy to connect you.
