DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has agreed to terms with four undrafted free agents. Those players are as follows:
- Trevin Esquerra, 1B, Loyola Marymount University
- Carson King, RHP, College of Central Florida
- Austin Langworthy, OF, University of Florida
- DJ Poteet, OF, Wake Forest University
Esquerra, 22, joins the Tigers following a four-year career at Loyola Marymount University. Over 167 career games with the Lions, Esquerra batted .276/.344/.504 with 45 doubles, 27 home runs and 101 RBI. Prior to the 2020 MLB Draft, Baseball America ranked him No. 7 among eligible college first baseman, and recently No. 8 on the list of college seniors in the undrafted free agent pool.
King, 20, split his college career between Florida Southern College and the College of Central Florida. During his 2019 season with the Mocs, King made 12 appearances and posted a 3-6 record, 7.09 ERA (47.0IP/37ER) and 41 strikeouts. He finished his collegiate career with the Patriots, appearing in four games during this shortened 2020 season.
Langworthy, 22, was a four-year starter at the University of Florida, totaling 198 games as a Gator. He batted a combined .270/.369/.413 with 36 doubles, 19 home runs and 106 RBI. He also appeared in 18 games as a pitcher, posting a 1-3 record and 3.34 ERA (32.1IP/12ER), striking out 17 and walking seven. Prior to the 2020 MLB Draft, Langworthy ranked No. 13 on Perfect Game’s list of top seniors in the class, and recently ranked No. 15 on Baseball America’s list of college seniors in the undrafted free agent pool. He was previously drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 31st round of the 2016 MLB Draft.
Playing three summers with Falmouth in the Cape Cod League, Langworthy earned an all-star nod in 2018 when he batted .206/.336/.422 with seven home runs and 16 RBI. That home run total ranked tied for second in the league for the season.
Poteet, 22, played three seasons at Wake Forest University, and was on pace to top many of his career highs during his pandemic-shortened junior season. Over 127 career games with the Demon Deacons, Poteet batted .233/.357/.394 with 14 doubles, 16 home runs and 64 RBI. Following a solid freshman campaign, in which he was tied for the team-high with nine homers, he was named a freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball and ranked No. 43 on Perfect Game’s list of top college sophomores heading into 2019.
In 2019, Poteet played for Amsterdam in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, batting .282 (22×78) with two home runs and 13 RBI. Following his 2018 summer league season, Perfect Game ranked him as the eighth-best prospect in the Cal Ripken League.
