The City of  Coral Springs recently recognized its 2020 Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department Employees of the year.

Note on Hollywood

New development coming to Hollywood

Improvements are coming to Downtown Hollywood. In one area, the long vacant Bread Building will be demolished to make room for a mixed-use development on a 1.3 acre site.

The developer, BTI has spent $15.7 million to buy the property that also includes a shopping center. BTI wants to build a 25-story luxury apartment tower to replace the Hollywood Bread Building. The Hollywood Commission has approved this plan.

When complete, there will a 25-story tower with 433 luxury apartments. There will be shops and cafes on the ground floor. The Bread Building will demolished. It has been vacant for years. The shopping center is less than half occupied. Noah Breakstone, the CEO of BTI Partners has said he believes the area has great potential.

Coral Springs announces winners of the MLK scholarships

The City of Coral Springs MLK Committee, in partnership with the Coral Springs Community Chest, Inc., announced the 15 high school seniors who were awarded scholarship funds for the 2021-2022 academic year. The announcement was made on June 8.

Vice Mayor Joshua Simmons said, “To come across such a large group of students practicing Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s teachings through their actions in their daily lives is incredibly powerful and inspiring. These students are peacemakers amongst their peers and stand up for racial equality. They make a positive and impactful difference in their communities. I wish them all continued success as they pursue higher education.”

The 15 students selected exemplify and embody the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s teachings on peace, racial harmony, community service and bettering the lives of others. The students were selected from the following local high schools: Coral Springs High, Coral Glades High, Coral Springs Charter and Marjory Stoneman Douglas.

Coral Springs to hold clean up event

The City of Coral Springs is seeking  volunteers, including high school students, to participate in picking up dead vegetation, trash, and debris from the base of the areca palms and placing them in larger piles. The clean-up will take place along Coral Springs Drive between Atlantic Boulevard and Riverside Drive. It will take place on Saturday, June 26 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Homeowners in the area are encouraged to bring their yard debris to the swales for the city to pick up and dispose for free. Volunteers are required to wear long pants, closed toe shoes and preferably long sleeves, a hat and sunscreen. City staff will provide volunteers with gloves, a vest, tools, water and snacks.
