Three Bulls named to American Baseball Preseason All-Conference Team; coaches poll announced

Jack Jasiak, Carmine Lane and Drew Brutcher were named to the Preseason All-Conference Team.

TAMPA (December 29, 2021) – The American Athletic Conference announced on Wednesday its Preseason All-Conference Team along with the preseason coaches poll for the 2022 baseball season. The University of South Florida landed three players on the Preseason All-Conference Team while the Bulls were voted sixth by the coaches in the eight-team league.

Jack Jasiak (Spring Hill) was one of just four unanimous selections to the Preseason All-Conference Team. 2021 Freshman All-Americans, Drew Brutcher (Lakeland) and Carmine Lane (Lake Placid), were also named to the AAC Preseason All-Conference Team.

Head coach Billy Mohl is entering his fifth season as skipper in 2022.

South Florida is coming off a historic 2021 campaign where the Bulls were picked to finish last in the coaches poll and proceeded to win the American Tournament Championship to earn their 14th NCAA Regional appearance. USF went on to win the Gainesville Regional and advance to the program’s first-ever NCAA Super Regional.

USF was one of the final 16 teams standing during the 2021 campaign and the lone team from the state of Florida. The Bulls were ranked inside the Top 25 by five different publications at the end of the 2021 season, checking in as high as No. 16.

The Bulls return seven starting position players from last season, two starting pitchers and their top bullpen arm. Lane was named to the American All-Conference Team in 2021. Daniel Cantu was named the AAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player while Lane, Jasiak and Brad Lord were each named to the All-Tournament Team. Matt Ruiz and Nelson Rivera were each named to the Gainesville Regional All-Tournament Team.

Jasiak led the USF pitching staff with six wins last season and enters 2022 with a 2.96 ERA over 20 career starts. He has turned in 14 quality starts in those 20 career outings. The right-hander struck out 93 batters over 98.1 IP last year while limiting batters to a .208 average.

Brutcher burst onto the scene as a true freshman in 2021 and batted .294 with six doubles, eight homers and 17 RBI despite missing 29 games due to injury. The left-handed hitter returned in the Regional Championship and delivered a pinch-hit RBI-single and produced a game-tying two-run homer in the ninth inning with two outs in Game 1 of the Super Regional at Texas.

Lane had a breakout season as a redshirt freshman in 2021. He led the Bulls in average (.306), hits (76), runs (44), RBI (43) and total bases (123). Lane ranked second on the team in doubles (14) and slugging (.496), and was third in home runs (11).

The Bulls open the 2022 campaign by hosting the USF Invitational on February 18-20, beginning with former AAC foe UConn on Friday, February 18 at USF Baseball Stadium. South Florida’s first seven games will all be played at home in Tampa.
