The NFL, The Refs, And Screw Jobs

By: Jeremy T.  Ballreich

In 2019 I was so disgusted by the Screw Jobs that kept top teams winning against the Lions (Chiefs and Packers to be exact.)
I boycotted watching the full games the rest of the season. But that didn’t stop me from DVRing the rest of the season. From week 6 to week 17 (16 games then), there was approximately 180 games over 100 of them was decided on game changing no/bad/horrific referee calls. Phantom Facemasks, emphasizing a holding call the didn’t call of either team all game, and so on.

The NFL and Roger Goodell need to address this still. I understand that bad or no calls can and will happen. That mistakes can be made, but when they directly effect the outcome of a great football contest. It looks, well, shady AF!

My suggestion is to adopt what College Football, the XFL, and the USFL has done. There is another referee in the press box with a monitor watching every play. When something gets called or not, he can alert the Head Ref by an earpiece. The Sky Judge does the review and makes the decision. The call will either be made right or upheld.

The 2nd thing, NFL Referees should be full time employees of the NFL. They get bumped and sometimes straight out hit on the field. They have to be in somewhat decent shape to be out there at the games keeping up with the action on the field. Until that happens, you will continue to see bad calls no matter what team you root for.

I for one am sick and tired of having refs decide games. The Detroit vs Chicago gane had its share of questionable calls too. But if it would have hindered Detroit from winning,  Chicago fans would have said don’t have your team in that position. But now it is their team. They’re crying. Grow up buttercups. It’s the NFL and crap happens. Maybe Chicago shouldn’t have missed that XP? Maybe not hold defensive players all frigging day. Just saying!
