Sommerkamp Makes $750,000 Gift Commitment to FAU Athletics

BOCA RATON –
Longtime Florida Atlantic University supporter and fan Erich Sommerkamp has made a $750,000 gift commitment to the Paradise Club.

Sommerkamp’s latest gift brings his lifetime total for giving to FAU Athletics to $1.06 million. He becomes the 14th individual or family donor to reach the $1 million mark in lifetime giving to the athletics department.

Sommerkamp’s affinity for the Owls began over two decades ago when he had an opportunity to meet the new head football coach and became one of the program’s football founders.

“I’ve been in Boca Raton for about 34 years,” Sommerkamp said. “I was approached by a neighbor who loves football. He asked me if I would be interested in meeting Howard Schnellenberger, who was starting a football program at FAU. So, I had lunch with Howard and that’s how it all started.

“I love sports and the idea of starting a football program with my local university was great,” Sommerkamp added. “So, I said yes to Coach Schnellenberger and 22 years later, here I am. I’m very happy to support FAU and the sports program.”

FAU Vice President and Director of Athletics Brian White announced Sommerkamp’s gift Tuesday.

“We could not be more grateful to Erich for his steadfast support of FAU Athletics throughout the years,” White said. “His incredible generosity continues to help us provide the best possible experience for FAU student-athletes for generations to come.”
