Softball Splits Day One of the UAB Tournament

BIRMINGHAM – UAB softball (12-11) opened up the UAB tournament with a win over Colgate (11-6) before falling to Furman (6-14) in game two.

The Blazers completed the shutout of Colgate in game one, marking the sixth shutout of the season for the Green and Gold. UAB was then shutout by Furman, the fourth time the Blazer bats have been held scoreless this year.

UAB 1, Colgate 0

Dylinn Stancil’s RBI single to right field in the third inning would be all the Blazers would need to defeat Colgate in game one of the UAB Tournament.

The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the third after KK Crocker walked and moved into scoring position with a timely steal of second base. Stancil then laced a hit past the diving second baseman scoring Crocker as the right fielder mishandled the ball.

The Raiders threatened throughout the game, but the Blazer defense kept them at bay preserving the shutout.

Jaycee Cook (4-1) picked up the win in the circle for the Blazers coming pitching 4.1 innings in relief of Amy Woodham, striking out two batters and allowing three hits.

UAB 0, Furman 2

The Blazers were shutout in game two of the UAB Tournament, falling to Furman 2-0.

Furman struck first in the top of the first inning with three singles off Sarah Cespedes (3-6) scoring one run to take the early 1-0 lead. The Paladins scored again in the second inning after a couple of UAB errors allowed the unearned run to cross home plate.

The Paladins scattered nine total hits with seven coming off Cespedes and two off Emily Kachel who entered in the fifth inning in relief. Cespedes struck out seven batters in her 4.1 innings of work.

The UAB batters were held to just three hits by Bailey Misken (3-8) who forced the Blazers into several groundouts while striking out four.

The Blazers will be back in action for day two of the UAB Tournament Saturday starting at 12:30 p.m. against Colgate, followed by Jacksonville at 3 p.m. at Mary Bowers Field.
