Softball Continues Home Stretch with USF Tournament

The Bulls host another weekend tournament, its penultimate of the season


TAMPA, March 5, 2020 – The University of South Florida softball team is gearing up for another weekend tournament at home. For this tournament, Iowa State, UMass and Wisconsin (RV) will be visiting USF Softball Stadium.

The Bulls are coming off an 8-2 win against Detroit Mercy on Wednesday. Brittany Hook (Willow Street, Pa.) earned her first collegiate win in her first career start, while Madison Epperson (Tampa, Fla.) and Dezarae Maldonado (Winter Haven, Fla.) each tallied a career-high three RBIs.

For the weekend tournament, a round robin will be used to determine seeds for a bracket-style tournament. The semifinals will be played on Saturday immediately following the last round-robin game, while the finals are scheduled for Sunday morning.

Scouting the Opponents

Iowa State (10-9)

Date: Friday, March 6, 2020 at 6:45 p.m.

Where: USF Softball Stadium

Series vs. USF: USF leads, 6-5

Players to Watch: 

  • Sami Williams (IF – Sr.) – Williams has been a driving force for the Cyclones offense this season. Tallying 23 RBIs in 19 games, the senior has also accumulated a .367/.465/.833 slash with seven home runs.
  • Ellie Spelhaug (UT – Fr.) – While the Cyclones have three pitchers who pitch in a committee, Spelhaug has been the most effective Cyclone so far this season. Holding opposing hitters to a .219 batting average, the freshman has thrown three complete games and earned two saves.

Players to Watch: 

  • Caroline Videtto (IF – Jr.): Videtto leads the team with a 1.134 OPS in six games. She’s tallied eight RBI and two doubles in 19 at bats this season.
  • Kiara Oliver (P- Jr.): Oliver has been a driving force for UMass’s pitching staff this season. In three starts, she’s tallied a 0.76 ERA with 21 strikeouts.

RV Wisconsin (10-9)

Date: Saturday, March 7 at 2 p.m.

Players to Watch: 

  • Kayla Konwent (1B/DP – Sr.): Konwent leads the Badgers with four home runs this season. In 17 games played, she’s hitting .400/.538/.720 with 11 RBIs.
  • Kaitlyn Menz (P – Sr.): Menz leads Wisconsin with 69 innings pitched this season. With seven complete games, she’s tallied a 1.93 ERA with 45 strikeouts and only nine walks.
