SMU Repeats as American Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Champions; UTSA’s Abonce Wins Individual Title

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. – The SMU Mustangs used a tournament-low 12-under 276 to move up two spots, overcome a nine-stroke deficit and win the 2024 American Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Championship, becoming just the second team to repeat as champions.  UTSA’s Daniela Abonce won the individual title, shooting a combined 9-under 207 over the three-day tournament.

The average score over the final day was 74.48 over 60 rounds.  Over the three-day, 54-hole course, teams held an average score of 74.26.

SMU saved their best round for last, shooting the second-best round in championship history, trailing only their 14-under 274 from a season ago. SMU finished at 21-under 843. The Mustangs held four of the top ten scorers, led by Emily Odwin, Ellie Szeryk and Mackenzie Lee’s 5-under 211.  Ashley Chow finished at 2-under 214.

Tulsa finished in second place, shooting 7-under 281 in the final round.  Over the three-day tournament, the Golden Hurricane shot 19-under 845.  Tulsa finished with two of the top three scorers, including the individual runner-up in Lovisa Gunnar who shot 8-under 208. Grace Kilcrease shot 6-under 210 for third place.

South Florida entered the day in first place and finished in third place after shooting 4-over 292 in the final round. Melanie Green was the top finisher for the Bulls, shooting 6-under 210 to tie for third place. Teammate Emma Falcher finished in 9th place, shooting 3-under 213.

East Carolina came in fourth place with a score of 2-over 866.  Oda Sofie Kilsti finished tied for 10th place at 2-under 214 to lead the Pirates.

UTSA finished in fifth place, shooting 7-over 871 in the tournament.  The Roadrunners were led by the 2024 American Athletic Conference Individual Champion Daniela Abonce, who shot 9-under 207 to win the title by one stroke.  Abonce shot 3-under 69 in the third round to move up two spots in the final day of competition.

Other Top 10 finishers in the championship were North Texas’ Mason Lewis, who shot 5-under 211 and South Florida’s Alyssa Montgomery and Tulsa’s Allyn Stephens, who both shot 2-under 214.  Lewis finished tied for 5th place, while Montgomery and Stephens tied for 10th place.
