Sixth Inning Rally Highlights Sunday Split

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The FAU softball team has a knack for late game rallies so far in the 2022 season. The Owls split Sunday’s action, losing to Delaware 3-0, before topping Illinois State 2-0.

GAME TWO
In the second of two games today, FAU and Illinois State were scoreless heading into the sixth inning. FAU put up a pair of runs in the sixth to jump out in front. It’s the fifth time that the Owls have taken the lead in the sixth inning or later this season.

Cameryn Orland began the inning with a base hit, then reached second on a throwing error by the Red Bird pitcher. After Kaitlyn Cunningham laid down a textbook sacrifice bunt, Sara Berthiaume laced an RBI single through the left side to break the scoreless tie. Myah Murray then gave FAU an insurance run with a chopped single up the middle to make it a two-run lead.

Lynn Gardner was terrific in the circle and threw her third complete game shutout of the year. The senior left-hander allowed only four hits while striking out five and walking just one. She improved to 5-4 with the victory.

GAME ONE
In game one, Gabby Sacco put forth an excellent start but took a tough loss. She went the full seven and allowed three runs, only one earned, and only allowed five hits.

The Blue Hens broke the scoreless tie in the sixth inning with a solo home run that was carried by the gusty winds. Delaware added two insurance runs in the seventh to pull out the 2-0 win.

Murray went 2-4 at the plate in game one, while Zoey Jones went 1-3 with a double.

The Owls will return to the diamond for a Tuesday matinee against SIUE, and first pitch is scheduled for noon.
