Carvalho, Inouye lead the way in Homecoming meet win
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes swept a tri-meet at the Whitten Pool Friday, opening Homecoming weekend on the University of Miami campus with wins over visiting Rutgers and SMU.
Miami enjoyed success in the early stages of the meet, with Giulia Carvalho winning the 50-yard freestyle (22.24) and freshman Ashlyn Massey blazing her way to a win in the 200-yard butterfly (1:57.40).
In the 100-yard breaststroke, Emma Sundstrand took first place (1:01.59) to continue momentum.
Miami had two of the top three swims in the 100-yard backstroke, coming from second-place finisher Tayla Jonker (54.18) and third-place finisher Mary Kate Kelley (54.19).
Freshman Marissa Inouye won the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.63) and veteran Adrianna Cera was second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:55.71), narrowly missing out on the top finish behind SMU’s Mira Szimcsak (9:55.53).
Miami secured the top two finishes in the 100-yard butterfly from Carvalho (52.83) and Massey (53.75), and Inouye picked up her second individual win – this time in the 500-yard freestyle (4:45.64). Carvalho went on to add another win in the 100-yard freestyle (48.89).
Kelley added to Miami’s point total with a win in the 200-yard backstroke (1:57.07) in the back half of the meet to help secure the victory.
Miami continues its season on Fri., Nov. 1 with a dual meet at Yale. Action is set to begin at 4 p.m. from New Haven, Conn.
