SB: Softball’s Late Offense Not Enough For Huskies

TAMPA, March 5, 2023 – The University of South Florida softball team’s late offensive run came up short in the 6-4 loss to the Northern Illinois Huskies on Sunday afternoon.

Freshman Jaden Martinez (Tallahassee) earned her fourth start of her career. She pitched 2.1 innings, allowed two hits and just as many runs. Senior Antoinette Hill (Braidwood, Ill.) came in for her 13th appearance. She pitched 2.2 innings. Morgan Grubb (Bartow) pitched the final two innings.

With the Bulls still looking for their first hit of the game, freshman Camille Ortiz- Martinez (Ponce, Puerto Rico) stepped up to the plate and doubled down the left field line to break up the no-hitter. Lauren Bevis (St. John’s) pinch hit and made the most of it. She singled up the middle to advance Ortiz-Martinez to third.

Jordyn Kadlub (Wesley Chapel) pinched hit and made the most of her at bat. After singling up the middle, Kadlub stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Huskies catcher. Bailee Leistl (Valrico) walked to bring Sheehan to the plate.

On the first pitch, Sheehan made contact with the ball for her first home run of the season. The three runs cut NIU’s lead in half. The Bulls added another run from a solo home run from Marissa Trivelpiece (Sugarloaf, Pa.) in the bottom of the seventh.
