Salary goes up by 16.8 million

The NFL announced this morning that the salary cap.is increasing by 16.8 million dollars. Why do I pay attention to this? Because it has serious implications upon what teams may or may not add in the off-season.

Take my beloved Lions for instance, prior to this increase. They would have had 17.8 million dollars in cap space. Just enough to sign their 8 draft picks. Now at 34.4 million, if they cut 4 cap anchors. They can realistically clear another 20 million making them in the top 16 for cap space this offseason. The no brainer cuts that clears the most space are Michael Brockers and Big Halapouluti Vatai, other 2 could be Romeo Okwara, and Charles Harris. Which 3 of those were not available either all or a good portion of the season. Thus taking them to another 54.4 million in cap space.

It will be interesting to see what they do with Okwara and Harris. Both had at least 1 year of good production and health. But this past season couldn’t provide much help to beleaguered defense.
