Road Winning Streak Ends after UAB Falls to FAU 65-58

BOCA RATON, Fla., Tenn.  – UAB’s four game conference road winning streak ended after falling to Florida Atlantic 65-58 on Saturday night at FAU Arena.

Tavin Lovan led all scorers with 19 points and Tyreek Scott-Grayson added 12 for the Blazers (16-12, 7-8 C-USA). Makhtar Gueye and Will Butler each had six rebounds.

The Owls (15-13, 7-8 C-USA) were led by Richardson Maitre with 15 points. Jailyn Ingram scored 12 points off the bench. Karlis Silins pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.

UAB jumped out to an early six point lead after Gueye’s 3-pointer and a power dunk from Butler made the score 11-5 coming out of the first media timeout. However, FAU’s 12-4 run after 12 media timeout put the Owls ahead 17-15. The lead would exchange hands three more times until back-to-back 3-pointers from Maitre put FAU ahead 23-18 with 7:53 remaining. Down 33-27 at 1:26, the Blazers would finish the half on an 8-0 run, capped by Lovan’s bank-in 3-pointer at the buzzer that put UAB in the lead heading into halftime 35-33.

The Blazers would ride the momentum into the second half and go ahead by six points at 14:46 by the score of 43-37. They would hold the lead until the midway point when the Owls would tie the game at 45-45. With the game still deadlocked, a driving layup by Kenan Blackshear put FAU ahead 58-56 with 2:45 left. Maitre’s 3-pointer with 1:21 to go made it a two possession game, giving the Owls a 61-57 lead. The Blazers would not get any field goals the rest of the way.

Next up, the Blazers return home to face Marshall (14-14, 8-7 C-USA) on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Thundering Herd are coming off a 74-66 win over Old Dominion earlier tonight.

The UAB Football team will be recognized for their 2019 West Division championship as part of Thursday’s home contest. Members of the squad will be featured on court during the second half as they prepare for 2020 spring practice which begins February 29.
