REVIEWING WEEK SIX OF THE 2021 COLLEGE FOOTBALL SEASON

Dear Readers,
I must say it was gutsy-but BOLD- for Arkansas to go for a 2-point conversion to win that game instead of kicking that XPK to tie and force OT in during a 52-51 road loss against Mississippi.
I hope all people who have an official vote for national awards really took note of a lot of players such as Coastal Carolina TE Isaiah Likely, Florida S Trey Dean III, Michigan P Brad Robbins, Texas A&M PK Seth Small, Oklahoma PK Gabe Brkic, Northern Illinois PK John Richardosn, and more to name for their performances in wins over their respective opponents. It stinks that the SBC (the Sun Belt Conference) doesn’t get enough tv exposure to see good football teams such as Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State.

I make this statement all the time. We all have to play the hands we are dealt by whoever makes the decisions. I hate it when teams from the same conference nearby play each other in early-October. and before. I like it when those teams play in November. Stanford played fellow Pac-12 teams from( their home state, such as (at) USC and UCLA already. Florida Atlantic played and beat FIU, 58-21 last week. Arkansas plays Texas A&M in late-September. Texas already had wins over Texas Tech and (at) TCU. I wish all those games could have teams who play teams from their home state or nearby state in November. I am an advocate of having further away teams from the same conference play each other in September, such as a Pac-12 team from the northwestern section of the Pac-12 North Division taking on a non-CA team from the Pac-12 South Division. I don’t know the logic of how those conferences decide the dates on scheduling besides getting the best t-v ratings on their t-v deals they have.
Texas A&M Head Coach Jimbo Fisher is the first former assistant coach (of current Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban) to get a win over Saban as the Aggies had a 41-38 home win over undefeated Alabama, who was ranked #1 in the nation, this past SAT night. Fisher was the offensive coordinator and QBs coach under Saban at LSU from 2000-04. After Saban left after the 2004 season, Fisher remained with the same position until leaving for the same positions at Florida State (2007-09) before finally being promoted to the head coaching job and the rest is history. Yes, I was one of countless people who doubted Texas A&M could beat Alabama but the Aggies showed to play and won on a last play FG. Nobody is more qualified than Fisher to reach that milestone. Saban is now 24-1 against his former assistant coaches.
I wish I could’ve remembered to mention this last week. For the first time since 1973, Michigan never trailed during a 5-0 start. Of course, HOF Head Coach Bo Schembechler was the Michigan Head Coach during his only undefeated season (with a 10-0-1) of his job.
I will mention his name in who deserves a gameball and a helmet sticker. Oklahoma RB Kennedy Brooks opted to sit out because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and came back to resume his college career. He had one of the best performances by an Oklahoma RB vs Texas and not to mention his career.
Congratulations to Massachusetts on finally ending a 16-game losing streak (including an 0-5 start this season) after a 27-13 home win over Connecticut.
Take care all! sincerely, RICH

RICH’S TOP TEN

1. Georgia (2)

2. Iowa (3)

3. Cincinnati (4)

4. Oklahoma (5)

5. Michigan (10)

6. Oklahoma State (8)

7. Coastal Carolina

8. Alabama (1)

9. Oregon (OTM)

10. Ohio State (OTM)

OTHER TEAMS TO MENTION (OTM):Michigan State, Wake Forest, Kentucky, SMU, San Diego State, and Penn State (6)

RANKINGS ANALYSIS:

There is another shake-up and some change-ups in my top ten rankings. I had to change because of three undefeated teams losing…. Alabama moved down from #1 to #8 in my top ten rankings after a 41-38 road win against Texas A&M in a primetime shootout. Like I said, I didn’t think the Crimson Tide were capable of losing to the Aggies. This football team will regroup to play a road game against Miss. State this SAT (7 PM, ESPN). You can’t count these MSU Bulldogs out, who had an upset road win over Texas A&M two weeks ago….Georgia must be very good to remain undefeated and eventually be ranked #1 in the nation. The Bulldogs came to the Plains and made a statement with a 34-10 road win over rival Auburn. This Georgia offense really showed me that they can stretch the field when backed up. This football team hasn’t been ranked #1 in all major polls since 1982 (the same year in which their All-American RB Herschel Walker won the Heisman Trophy). The ‘Dawgs have a home game against Kentucky, who are among my OTMs, this SAT (3:30 PM, CBS). The UK Wildcats are on their first 6-0 start since 1950, including a 42-21 home win over LSU this past SAT. The winner is expected to win the SEC East Division title and play in the SEC Championship Game…Iowa moved up from #3 to #2 after a 23-20 home win over Penn State, who was ranked #6 in my top rankings last week, to remain on a current 12-game winning streak (including a 6-0 start). It looks like the Hawkeyes will win the Big Ten West Division title and play in the Big Ten Championship Game. The Iowa Hawkeyes will have a homecoming game against Purdue, who is coming off a bye-week, this SAT (3:30 PM, ABC) while the Nittany Lions will use this bye-week to regroup for an Oct.23 home game against Illinois…Cincinnati moved up from #4 to #3 in my top ten rankings. The UC Bearcats are coming off a 52-3 home win over Temple. This football team has a home game against UCF, who can still compete after losing star QB Dillon Gabriel to a season-ending collarbone injury, this SAT (Noon, ABC). Cincy better be on top of their game because their last two wins over the Golden Knights have been very tough and close…Oklahoma moved up from #5 to #4 in my top ten rankings. The Sooners went through a degree of difficulty in the last three weeks to remain undefeated. As expected, this football team had another tough as anticipated game against rival Texas. The Sooners overcame a 28-7 deficit to have a 48-41 comeback neutral-site win (in Dallas, TX) over the Longhorns. If Alabama would’ve remained undefeated, Oklahoma would remain #5. The Sooners will have another tough challenge with a road game against TCU this SAT (7:30 PM, ABC).The Oklahoma defense better step it up…. Michigan moved up from #10 to #5 in my top ten rankings. Finally, the U-M Wolverines took on a major challenge, which was a tougher than anticipated 32-29 road win over Nebraska. I tell people when a team takes on the Cornhuskers when Nebraska QB Adrian Martinez is 100% healthy, the opposing defense will have their hands full. This football team will have a bye-week before an Oct.23 road game against Northwestern…Undefeated Coastal Carolina will remain ranked #7 in my top ten rankings. The CCU Chanticleers are coming off a 52-20 road win over Arkansas State. This football team will have a bye-week before a Oct.20 road game against Appalachian State, who is looking to regain their place at the top of the SBC East Division over Coastal Carolina…Oregon moved up from my OTMs to #9 in my top ten rankings. The Ducks are coming off a bye-week after a disappointing road loss against Stanford two SAT’s ago. This football team has a home game against California this FRI (10:30 PM)…Ohio State is back into my top ten rankings. The Buckeyes are coming off a 66-17 home win over Maryland. This football team has a bye-week before an Oct.23 road game against Indiana…Michigan State is one of the most rebuilt teams in the nation. The MSU Spartans are among my OTMs. This football team had a 2-5 mark (all in Big Ten play) last season and will play in a bowl game. This MSU Spartans offense is one of the most improved offenses in the nation by going one of the worst offenses to reaching the top half of the Big Ten. Michigan State will have a road game against Indiana this SAT (Noon, FS1)…Wake Forest has started to surprise everybody. The Demon Deacons have won their last two games, which came down to the wire, such as a 40-37 road win over Syracuse last week. This football team is on their first 6-0 start for the first time since 1944. Wake Forest will have a bye-week before an Oct.23 road game against Army….SMU is considered the second-best team in the AAC right behind Cincinnati. The Mustangs survived a scare in a 31-24 road win over Navy. This football team has a bye-week before an Oct.21 home game against Tulane… San Diego State is once again making a name for themselves. The SDSU Aztecs are on a 5-0 start, including a 31-7 home win over New Mexico. A win over rival San Jose State this SAT (10:30 PM, CBSSN) would make them bowl-eligible this season. After this weekend, the remaining schedule will get tougher for this football team…ENJOY THE GAMES THIS WEEKEND!!!!
