REVIEWING WEEK FOUR OF THE 2021 COLLEGE FOOTBALL SEASON

Congratulations to Notre Dame Head Coach Brian Kelly for surpassing Kneute Rockne as the all-time winningest head coach in Notre Dame football history. There is some controversy about this milestone. Notre Dame will include the those 21 vacated wins from 2012-13 (including a 12-1 mark from 2012) in their records while the NCAA won’t count those wins. As you know, the NCAA stripped the Fighting Irish of those wins because of NCAA violations, such as academic infractions. You are also punishing players who had nothing to do with that infraction and take something they put a lot of hardwork and sacrifice into. Two ways to look at this thought: A) Notre Dame should cop to the NCAA meaning if the NCAA won’t count those wins for their records, then the Fighting Irish shouldn’t count those wins in their records and B) the NCAA should know that once something goes down, outcomes and decisions should remain final and academic. I believe in the B part because it is what it is and you can’t change it. But the NCAA should sanction fines, bowl bans, and probations for violations that someone like they did for the Irish instead of stripping wins-vacant or forfeit.
I hope all people who have an official vote for national awards really took note of a lot of players such as Iowa LB Jack Campbell,  East Carolina CB JaQuan McMillian, Auburn PK Anders Carlson, Michigan State PK Matt Coghlin, Oklahoma State S Kolby Harvell-Peel, UTSA RB Sincere McCormick, Oklahoma State LB Malcolm Rodriguez, UTSA PK Hunter Duplesis, and more to name for their performances in wins over their respective opponents.
We have one month of this 2021 season in the books. There are a lot of teams who have surprised me with a 3-1 and a 4-0 start. The most surprising team with a 4-0 mark is Michigan State, who were coming off a 2-6 mark from last season. I thought the MSU Spartans would finish dead last in the Big Ten East Division. I really thought Northwestern or Miami, who had road games against Michigan State, would get a win over the Spartans. The most surprising team with a 3-1 mark is Oregon State. The OSU Beavers had a 30-21 road loss against Purdue in their season-opener. Before this season, I didn’t think Oregon State would get a road win over USC. I really thought the Beavers  would have a 2-2 start or worse in September 2021.
Congratulations to Oregon State on their 45-27 road win over USC, which marked their first road win over the Trojans since 1960.
ESPN College Gameday will be in Athens, GA for the Arkansas at Georgia game this SAT while FOX Big Noon Kickoff will emanate from Madison, WI for the Michigan at Wisconsin game.
As you scroll down to the GAMEBALLS and HELMET STICKERS section, I think the Romney Brothers are the first pair of brothers to be listed in the same game that I have ever done as they played a role in helping the BYU Cougars have a 35-27 home win over South Florida.
Take care all! Sincerely, RICH

RICH’S TOP TEN

1. Alabama

2. Georgia

3. Notre Dame (7)

4. Iowa (5)

5. Cincinnati (4)

6. Oregon

7. Oklahoma (3)

8. Penn State

9. Coastal Carolina

10. Oklahoma State (OTM)

OTHER TEAMS TO MENTION (OTM):Ohio State, BYU, Mississippi, and Arkansas

RANKINGS ANALYSIS: There is another shake-up and some change-ups in my top ten rankings. I had to change undefeated teams around because of poor performances they had in wins over respective opponents.  No surprise that #1 Alabama and #2 Georgia had blow-out wins over their respective opponents but will have challenging home games this SAT. The Crimson Tide will have a home game against Mississippi, who are coming off a bye-week, this SAT (3:30 PM, CBS) while the Bulldogs have a home game against Arkansas this SAT (Noon, ESPN). I have Mississippi and Arkansas among my OTMs because they are each on their first 4-0 start in who knows how long and could pull off upsets in their respective games. Even though those visiting teams are the underdogs, we got to give them the benefit of the doubt. If either of those visiting underdogs win, they will definitely be in the top ten rankings everywhere….I know the EICH will be happy about this but I had to do this. I had to move Notre Dame from #7 to #3 in my top ten rankings. The Fighting Irish were impressive in their 41-13 neutral-site win (in Chicago, IL) over Wisconsin-no question about it. I really thought it would be a competitive game with a lot of defense but Irish eyes were smiling. More challenges are on the horizon for this football team as Notre Dame will have a home game against #5 Cincinnati, who are coming off a bye-week, this SAT (2:30 PM, NBC). IF the UC Bearcats defeat the Irish, consider them FOR REAL! and that is a message to the CFB Playoff Selection Committee…Oregon remains ranked #6 in my top ten rankings. During a 41-19 home win over Arizona, I really thought the Wildcats were gaining up on these Ducks when Oregon was ahead by 8 points. This game was a foregone conclusion because the Ducks were going to win this game. Had the Ducks not covered the spread, Oregon would’ve ranked somewhere between #7-10 in my top ten rankings. The Ducks will keep winning, including a road game against upset-minded Stanford this SAT (3:30 PM, ABC)…I had to move Oklahoma down from #3 to #7 because they played horribly in a 16-13 home win over West Virginia in a game they could’ve lost. It took lucky breaks when it mattered most for the Sooners to eventually win this game over the Mountaineers. Oklahoma better practice hard for a road game against Kansas State, who has won the last two meetings against the Sooners, this SAT (3:30 PM, FOX). Last season, the Sooners’ blew a 21-point lead and eventually lost to the K-State Wildcats, which was the first loss with QB Spencer Rattler under center. Here is some good news for the Oklahoma defense- Kansas State QB Skylar Thompson, who led the Wildcats to those wins, is likely out of action for this game because of a knee injury…Iowa moved down from #5 to #4 because they need more offensive firepower. The Hawkeyes are coming off a 24-14 home win over Colorado State. Could’ve done better. This football team has a road game against Maryland, who also is on a surprising 4-0 start, this FRI (8 PM, FS1). I think the Hawkeyes will find ways to beat the Terrapins. Should the U-M Terps win over these Hawks, they will be among my OTMs and QB Taulia Tagovailoa could be in the conversation for the Heisman Trophy for however long possible…#8 Penn State remains on a current eight-game winning streak (including a 4-0 start this season), including a 38-17 home win over Villanova. The NIttany Lions are making up from a disastrous 4-5 mark from last season. Penn State will have a home game against Indiana this SAT (7:30 PM, ABC)…Oklahoma State is the new addition in my top ten rankings. The OSU Cowboys moved from among my OTMs to #10. Finally, these Pokes have a win by double-digits. Oklahoma State is coming off a 31-20 home win over Kansas State. The Cowboys have a home game against Baylor, who is ranked #21 in the AP Sportswriters’ Poll, this SAT (7 PM, ESPN2)…Coastal Carolina remains ranked #9  in my top ten rankings. The Chanticleers are coming off a 53-3 home win over Massachusetts. This football team has a home game against UL-Monroe this SAT (2:30 PM)….Ohio State continues to improve since that early-season home loss against Oregon. The Buckeyes are coming off a 59-7 home win over Akron. This football team has a road game against upset-minded Rutgers this SAT (3:30 PM, BTN)…BYU remains on a current six-game winning streak (including a 4-0 start this season). The BYU Cougars were considered candidates to replace Texas A&M as the #10 team in my top ten rankings but they were letting up in their 35-27 home win over South Florida. This football team could’ve done better than last week’s performance. BYU will play a road game against Utah State this FRI (9 PM, CBSSN)…If Michigan remains undefeated after a road win over Wisconsin this SAT (Noon, FOX), the U-M Wolverines will be among my OTMs for sure…
