REVIEWING WEEK FIVE OF THE 2021 COLLEGE FOOTBALL SEASON

Dear Readers,
Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban is now 24-0 against his former assistant coaches.
I hope all people who have an official vote for national awards really took note of a lot of players such as BYU RB Tyler Allgerier, Oregon State LB Avery Roberts, Appalachian State LB D’Marco Jackson, Western Michigan WR Skyy Moore, San Jose State TE Derrick Deese Jr, and more to name for their performances in wins over their respective opponents. It stinks that the SBC (the Sun Belt Conference) doesn’t get enough tv exposure to see good football teams such as Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State.

Last week, I couldn’t think of who really deserved to be on my weekly Heisman Trophy ballot but this week I had five players who were in consideration. Michigan State RB Kenneth Walker and BYU RB Tyler Allgeier were in consideration to be on the ballot for their performances this past weekend.
Last week, I realized I made a mistake by typing that Wake Forest PK Nick Sciba has scored on 22 straight FG attempts. He was on a streak of scoring on 19 straight FG attempts prior to their eventual 37-34 home win over Louisville. Sciba did make it to his current streak of 22 straight FG attempts during their home win over the Cardinals. My apologies for that error.
Also after this SAT is over, any undefeated team who has a 6-0 start-without a bye-week so far- will be bowl eligible this season. Oklahoma needs to beat Texas. Michigan State needs to beat Rutgers. Kentucky needs to beat LSU. Alabama needs to beat Texas A&M. AND SO ON!!!And those teams will play in a bowl game this year.
Take care all! Sincerely, RICH

RICH’S TOP TEN

1. Alabama

2. Georgia

3. Iowa (4)

4. Cincinnati (5)

5. Oklahoma (7)

6. Penn State (8)

7. Coastal Carolina (9)

8. Oklahoma State (10)

9. BYU (OTM)

10. Michigan (not ranked or mentioned)

OTHER TEAMS TO MENTION (OTM):Oregon (6), Ohio State, Michigan State, Kentucky, Texas, and Auburn

RANKINGS ANALYSIS:

There is another shake-up and some change-ups in my top ten rankings. I had to change undefeated teams around because of poor performances they had in wins over respective opponents.  No surprise that #1 Alabama and #2 Georgia had blow-out wins over their respective opponents but will have challenging road games this SAT. The Crimson Tide is coming off a 42-21 home win over Mississippi, who were coming off a bye-week, and exploited all weaknesses that the Ole Miss Rebels had on defense. I really thought Mississippi QB Matt Corral was gonna give that ‘Bama defense all kinds of headaches. That bye-week didn’t pay off for this Mississippi. The Tide showed why they are the defending national champions who remain #1 in the nation. This football team has a road game against Texas A&M for a prime time game this SAT (8 PM, CBS). Consider that game a foregone conclusion in favor of Alabama over Texas A&M….Speaking of Georgia, the Bulldogs are coming off a 37-0 home win over Arkansas, who were among my OTMs last week and was ranked #8 in the AP Sportswriters’ Poll. Like Alabama did to Mississippi, Georgia took advantage of all weaknesses and mistakes made by their visiting opponents. The “Dawgs better pack a lunch because they will have a long, tough game in front of them with a road game against rival Auburn, who are coming off a 24-19 landmark road win over LSU to be among my OTMs, this SAT (3:30 PM, CBS). The Georgia offense will have to do a lot of practicing to go up against this Auburn Tigers defense…Oregon moves down from #6 to among my OTMs because the Ducks totally blew all kinds of momentum, including adding to a 24-17 lead, they had during a 31-24 road loss against upset-minded Stanford, who has a history of having a few wins over then-undefeated Oregon. The Ducks shouldn’t be ranked in the top ten because of their lousy performance against the Cardinal. The only reason I have Oregon among my OTMs with one loss is because of their road win over Ohio State a few weeks ago. Sadly, star RB C.J Verdell suffered a season-ending leg injury during that road loss against Stanford. The Ducks will have to regroup for a home game against California this SAT (10:30 PM, ESPN)…..Iowa moved up from #4 to #3 because of that impressive 51-14 road win over then-undefeated Maryland, who had a 4-0 start prior to kickoff, this past FRI. The Hawkeyes are one of those football teams who aren’t highly known for their offense but beat with their defense. This football team does a great job of capitalizing on favorable field position on both sides of the ball. Iowa will be a true home test against Penn State, who moved up from #8 to #6, this SAT (4 PM). The Nittany Lions are coming off a 24-0 home game over Indiana to remain on a current 9-game winning streak (including a 5-0 start this season) and ranked #4 in the major polls. Remember last season, Iowa had a 41-21 road win over Penn State in Happy Valley. The FOX Big Noon Kickoff show crew will be there in Iowa City for this game, which could be a preview of the Big Ten Championship Game….Cincinnati moved up from #5 to #4 after a 24-13 road win over Notre Dame, who was ranked #3 in my top ten rankings. If the UC Bearcats win out before the bowl game pairings are unveiled, that win over the Fighting Irish should solidify their argument. This football team has a home game against Temple this FRI (7 PM, ESPN)…Oklahoma moved up from #7 to #5 after a 37-31 road win over Kansas State. It took teams such as Oregon and Notre Dame to lose their respective games for me to move the Sooners up in my top ten rankings. If this football team thought playing a road game against Kansas State was tough, this upcoming neutral-site game (at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, TX) against Texas in the annual Red River Showdown will be tougher. The Longhorns are among my OTMs after a 32-27 road win over TCU. Should the Longhorns defeat the Sooners, Texas will be in the top ten everywhere…Coastal Carolina moved up from #9 to #7 after a 59-6 home win over UL-Monroe. The CCU Chanticleers are a very talented football team but they really need to play somebody. This football team will continue to win out, including a road game against Arkansas State this THURS (7:30 PM, ESPN U), before an Oct.20 road game against Appalachian State to determine who will win the SBC East Division title. This football team better not look past these ASU Red Wolves for these App State Mountaineers…Oklahoma State moved up from #10 to #8 after a 24-14 home win over Baylor. The OSU Cowboys will have a bye-week before an Oct.16 road game against Texas. The Cowboys are looking to remain as one of the two leading teams in the Big 12 standings…Michigan moves up to being ranked #10 in my top ten rankings. The U-M Wolverines had a decisive 38-17 road win over Wisconsin. When Wisconsin QB Graham Mertz had to leave that game with a chest injury, it was game, set, match for Michigan to win this game. I hope Michigan State, Ohio State, and Penn State were watching this game. This football team will have a road game against upset-minded Nebraska this SAT (7:30 PM, ABC). The Michigan defense will have their hands full against Nebraska QB Adrian Martinez… BYU moved up from OTM to #9 in my top ten rankings. The BYU Cougars are coming off a 34-20 road win over Utah State. This football team has a home game against Boise State this SAT (3:30 PM, ABC)…Ohio State keeps getting better and better since that home loss against Oregon a few weeks ago. The Buckeyes are coming off a 52-13 road win over Rutgers. This football team has a home game against Maryland this SAT (Noon, FOX)… Michigan State is one of the most surprising teams this season. The MSU Spartans are improving from a 2-5 mark from last season to a 5-0 start this season. Star RB Kenneth Walker, who is a graduate transfer from Wake Forest, is a difference-maker for this Michigan State offense. This football team, who is ranked #11 in the major polls, is coming off a 48-31 homecoming win over Wake Forest. Still some work has to be done for these Spartans as they have a road game against Rutgers this SAT (Noon, BTN)… Kentucky is among my OTMs because they are on a 5-0 start. The UK Wildcats are coming off a 20-17 home win over Florida, which marks their first win over a top ten since 2010 and their first home win over the Gators since 1986. This football team will have another tough home game against LSU, who are coming off a tough 24-19 home loss against Auburn, this SAT (7:30 PM, SECN). The Kentucky defense will need two DBs to double-up on LSU WR Kayshon Boutte to win this upcoming game…ENJOY THE GAMES THIS WEEKEND!!!!
