BIRMINGHAM – Carlyn Presley scored in the 19th and 87th minutes to lead the UAB Women’s Soccer team to a 3-0 shutout of Jacksonville State on Sunday night.
The game was delayed almost two hours due to lightning, but that did not slow UAB down. The Blazers opened the scoring when Maiya Clark beat the defense on the right side and fed Presley in the box. UAB’s second goal came in the 36th minute when the ball found Asha Zuniga after a scrum off a corner kick. She tapped the ball to Canby Biddle who buried it for her first goal of the season.
Presley added her second of the contest after taking a Stella Lawson pass in for the score.
“I think we were absolutely brilliant defensively tonight,” said head coach Lisa Mann.
The Blazers’ defense held JSU to one shot as Eve Beyer recorded her 16th career clean sheet.
“It’s a big win, but I think we could have scored more with the amount of chances that we created but is something we’re going to have to improve on as the season goes on,” added Mann.
UAB had 18 total shots, 10 on target. Presley had seven shots, six on net, both career-highs.
Up next, the Blazers make a Texas swing as they face No. 16 TCU Aug. 31 followed by Stephen F. Austin Sept. 3. The next home match is against Tennessee Tech Sept. 7.
