Regular Season Week 2

JAGUARS CAPTAINS: The captains for the Jaguars in today’s game were DLCalais Campbell, S Cody Davis, LB Myles Jack and OL Brandon Linder.

MINSHEW MAKES A DIFFERENCE: Rookie QB Gardner Minshew II, who made his first career start today, completed 23 of 33 passes (69.7 comp. pct.) for 213 yards and one TD for a passer rating of 97.2. Minshew also rushed six times for 56 yards (9.3 rush avg.), including a long rush of 21 yards. Through Week 2, Minshew has completed 45 of 58 passes (77.6 comp. pct.) for 488 yards, three TDs and one INT for a passer rating of 111.8. His 45 completions, 488 passing yards and three passing TDs are all the most by a Jaguars rookie through Week 2 in franchise history. Minshew is the only rookie in franchise history to throw for at least 200 passing yards in each of his first two career games played. Trailing by seven with 3:36 remaining, Minshew led the Jaguars on a 14-play, 68-yard drive that culminated in a 4-yard TD pass to WR DJ Chark Jr. to bring Jacksonville within one.

OPENING DEFENSIVE POSSESSION: The Jaguars defense forced a three-and-out on the Texans’ first offensive possession of Sunday’s game. Jaguars held the Texans to six points on Houston’s first eight offensive possessions.

COOKE FLIPPING THE FIELD: P Logan Cooke punted six times with a 47.2 net punting avg. (48.0 gross avg.) in today’s game. Cooke placed four punts inside the 20 today, which tied his single-game career-high. In 2018, Cooke broke the franchise record for single-season net punting avg. (41.3), and he’s currently averaging 47.4 net yards per punt in 2019.

LAMBO CONNECTS: After converting a 40-yard FG in the second quarter and a 32-yard FG in the fourth quarter, K Josh Lambo has now made 42 of 45 FG attempts with the Jaguars since he signed with the team on Oct. 17, 2017. His 93.3 FG pct. is the highest in franchise history (min. 10 FGA). Lambo has converted 15 of 16 FGs against divisional opponents (93.8 pct.) since joining the Jaguars.

SACKS LEAD TO PUNTS: In the second quarter, LB Myles Jack and LB Leon Jacobs combined for a sack of Texans QB Deshaun Watson for an 8-yard loss. The half-sack was the first of Jacobs’ career, and Jack now moves to 5.5 career sacks. Later that quarter, on third-and-10, seventh-year CB D.J. Hayden took down Watson for an 8-yard loss, which marked Hayden’s first sack since Week 2 of the 2018 season vs. New England.

HARRISON CREDITED WITH A SACK:  Late in the second quarter, S Ronnie Harrison was credited with a sack after Texans QB Deshaun Watson ran out of bounds for no gain. This marked the second sack of Harrison’s 16-game career. The Jaguars registered at least 3.0 first-half sacks in back-to-back games against the Texans, dating back to the 2018 season.

ALLEN CREDITED WITH FIRST CAREER SACK: Selected with the seventh overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, DE Josh Allen was credited with his first career sack on the first possession of the second half when he pounced on Texans QBDeshaun Watson for a 6-yard loss. The former Bronco Nagurski award winner totaled 17.0 sacks in 2018 at Kentucky, the most by an SEC player in a single season since the NCAA started official sack records in 2000.

CHARK ATTACK: At 22 years old, WR DJ Chark Jr. is the youngest player in franchise history to post at least 200 receiving yards through Week 2 of the season. Chark caught seven passes for 55 yards and one TD in today’s game and posted 146 receiving yards and one TD last Sunday against Kansas City. Through two games, Chark is averaging 100.5 receiving yards and one TD per game, as well as 18.3 yards per reception.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

  • Third-round rookie LB Quincy Williams led the team with nine tackles (six solo) in today’s game.
  • DL Calais Campbell has now started 153 career games, the most among active defensive linemen.
  • CB Jalen Ramsey has now started all 50 career games since being drafted fifth overall in 2016, the fourth-longest active streak for consecutive starts by a CB in the NFL. Ramsey has now totaled 11 passes defensed in four career games at Houston’s NRG Stadium.
  • For the fourth consecutive regular season game, the Jaguars started a different QB – Week 2: Gardner Minshew II; Week 1: Nick Foles; Week 17 in 2018: Blake Bortles; Week 16 in 2018: Cody Kessler.
