Week 9 Postgame Notes

Sunday, Nov. 8, 2020

The Jaguars fell to the Houston Texans, 27-25 in Week 9 at TIAA Bank Field.

LUTON’S DEBUT: QB Jake Luton completed 26 of 38 passes for 304 passing yards and two total TDs (one rushing, one passing). His 306-yard performance marked the most passing yards by a rookie quarterback in their debut in franchise history. Luton added a 13-yard rushing TD to bring the Jaguars within 2 in the final minutes, joining QBs Jonathan Quinn (1998) and Byron Leftwich (2003) as the only rookie quarterbacks in franchise history to throw and rush for a TD in the same game.

His first completion of the game and his career came on a 73-yard TD to WR DJ Chark Jr., marking the third-longest completion by a rookie QB in franchise history and the longest completed pass by any rookie in the NFL this season. Luton’s 73-yard strike marked the fourth-longest pass by an NFL player on their first career completion in their first career game since 1970. The score came with 14:08 remaining in the first quarter, the second-fastest TD scored in team history and the fastest TD scored since former RB Leonard Fournette’s 75-yard TD run (14:35 remaining in the first quarter) on Oct. 15, 2017.

CHARK ATTACK: WR DJ Chark Jr. caught seven passes for 146 yards and one TD, marking the third-most receiving yards of his career and his fourth career game with at least 100 yards. He caught a 73-yard TD pass on Jacksonville’s third play from scrimmage, the longest reception of his career and the longest reception by any Jaguars player since WR Donte Moncrief scored on an 80-yard reception on Nov. 11, 2018.

Chark’s four 100-yard games are the fourth-most in franchise history through a player’s first 33 games. He leads the team with 33 catches for 437 yards and four TDs this season.

RUMBLING ROBINSON: RB James Robinson finished with 25 rushes for 99 yards, surpassing RB Phillip Lindsay for the most scrimmage yards by an undrafted rookie through the first nine weeks of a season in NFL history. He leads the Jaguars in scrimmage yards (805) and TDs (seven) this season and joins RBs Fred Taylor and Leonard Fournette as the only players in franchise history to surpass 800 scrimmage yards through their first eight career games.

He scored his seventh TD of the season today on a 1-yard plunge, which tied RB Samkon Gado (2005) and RB James Mungro (2002) for the most TDs in NFL history by an undrafted rookie through their first eight career games.

JACK ATTACK: LB Myles Jack led the Jaguars with 11 tackles, including one tackle for loss, and has now tallied double-digit tackles in four of six games this season. Jack also forced the second fumble of his career which was recovered by DT DaVon Hamilton for the first fumble recovery of Hamilton’s career. Jack became the second Jaguars player this year to make 10-plus tackles and record a takeaway in the same game (LB Joe Schobert, Week 6).

LAMBOMATIC: K Josh Lambo connected on two field goals, including a 59-yard attempt to conclude the first half, tying a franchise record for the longest field goal in team history (K Josh Scobee, Oct. 3, 2010 vs. IND). Lambo has now made all 46 of his attempts in home games (all 41 attempts at TIAA Bank Field and five attempts at Wembley Stadium) and has made 12 of his 13 attempts of at least 50 yards. The sixth-year kicker has connected on seven straight field goals of at least 50 yards, the longest streak in the NFL.

COOKE’S CORNER: P Logan Cooke placed three of his four punts inside the Texans 20, including two punts inside the 10. Cooke punted five times for 234 yards with a 46.8-yard net punting average. His career 43.1 net punting average is the highest in Jaguars history.
