Week 10

Jaguars

Head Coach Doug Pederson

Q: Can you discuss how you handled Patrick Mahomes and his unpredictability?
PEDERSON: “Great player. He does a great job out of the pocket and that is where a lot of the big plays
come from. It is hard to defend. You have to play snap to whistle. He is probably one of the best in football at it.”
Q: Can you talk about Trevor Lawrence’s performance?
PEDERSON: “Obviously, we have to look at the film on the way back. I thought he played well. He had
great poise. I know there was some pressure in the first half that we eliminated in the second half. He
played tough and had some big moments out there. He had some big throws. He just keeps showing
improvement each week and that is all we can ask for. You know his growth and development. I think as
a team today, it was a game of missed opportunity.”
Q: What caused the struggle with the run game, the Chiefs defense or miscommunication on the offense’s
end?
PEDERSON: “It is a little bit of them, and obviously, a little bit of us. We have to pride ourselves more on
running the ball and controlling it a bit. They did a nice job of controlling the line of scrimmage at times.
But it is something that we have to do. We have to clean it up. We get time now this week to look at some stuff and get ready for the back half of this year.”
Q: Was Devin Lloyd injured or was it a direct decision to include Chad Muma more?
PEDERSON: “There was no injury. We just needed to get Chad in the game.”
Q: Was the plan always to do an onside kick to start the game?
PEDERSON: “I was not telling you on Wednesday if I was going to do it. There are things that you look at
and Heath (Farwell) and Luke (Thompson) do a great job of studying the opponents. Anytime you can take advantage of an opportunity, we are going to try to do that, especially against a really good football team. You hope that by stealing that possession right there, you go down and get three or seven and you take a little sting out of the game a little bit and out of the crowd. It is unfortunate we got stopped in that first possession. We had opportunities. They were there, we just didn’t capitalize on it. As the week went on, I just got more comfortable taking the on-side if it was there.”
Q: You won the turnover game, but explain why you could not pull out a win?
PEDERSON: “It was only seven points off of all of that. That is the game for me. It comes down to missed
opportunities. It is a learning opportunity for our football team that you create the takeaways and you get a great play on special teams, and I mean special teams really kind of kept us in. Their return game was
outstanding today. I think we even had a turnover on special teams. We have to score more. We have to
score more points off of those takeaways.”
Q: With the physical defense today, is that the kind of defense you are wanting?
PEDERSON: “You want your guys to play aggressive, physical, and within the rules. That is what we have
to do. You don’t want to take the physicality away from anyone offense, defense, or special teams. This is
a game too where you have to play snap to whistle. We will take a look at everything this week and see
where we are at. You never obviously want to hurt anybody or put anybody in harms way. At the same
time, you want to keep the aggressiveness and the physicality of the game.”
Q: Was there anything mechanically wrong with Riley Patterson’s missed kicks?
PEDERSON: “I will take a look at it, but he just missed two kicks. You can’t give up points. These are the
missed opportunities that we are talking about.”
Q: Were there miscommunication issues in the defense letting the Chiefs touchdowns have wide open
coverage?
PEDERSON: “Again, I think it has to come down to watching the film to give you a better answer quite
honestly until I look at that and see exactly what happened.”
Q: What is your message to the guys after a game like this going into the bye week?
PEDERSON: “The biggest thing is how you look at it, like I am saying here. It was missed opportunities.
When you play great football teams, and the Chiefs are one of those great football teams who are well
coached, you have to capitalize. I know they pride themselves of taking care of the football. When you
can create those opportunities as a team, we have got to take advantage of that and we did not do that
as a football team today. That is really the message. I will say this, it is not for lack of effort or anything
like that at all. We have played ten straight weeks now. The team needs a break at this time. It is a good
time for it to kind of step away. I told them to kind of regroup and really think about the first ten, but
more importantly, I want them to think of the next third of this season and really focus on that. I believe
that our goals are still in front of us. We made it a little bit harder today, but I think if we continue to
improve, anything is possible moving forward.”

Week 10

Jaguars

QB Trevor Lawrence

Q: How disappointing was it to not be able to take advantage of some of the field position you had?
LAWRENCE: “Yeah, it’s tough to win games in general when you don’t take advantage of those
opportunities, especially against a really good team. They have a really good offense and a really good
defense over there. They did some stuff in the first half defensively where we didn’t play our best ball,
didn’t execute well. We started to get in a little bit of a rhythm at the end of the first half, going into the
second half. There were too many missed opportunities too early. We still had our chance at the end of
the game, and we didn’t make the plays to get back in it there. It’s hard to overcome when you miss that
many opportunities early in the game against a good team. Just a little bit too many of those.”

Q: You guys had a 2.5 to 1 pass to run ratio. Was that by design or just the way the game played out?
LAWRENCE: “Obviously, the run game is something that we’ve been very good at this season and that’s
always an emphasis for us. We’ve got great backs, guys up front and tight ends to execute it. Today, they
had a really good plan for stopping the run. It’s obviously something that we do well. We still hit a few,
but there will be a lot of stuff to learn from on tape. There were times where they just kind of beat us to
the spot and had a good idea of where we were heading. You’re playing on the road, they time up your
cadence, they brought some pressures, and they did a good job. Those are all things that we will learn
from. We’ll watch the tape and we have an extra week now, so we can dive into it a little more. There will
be a lot of stuff to learn from.”

Q: How close is this team to being able to overcome those mistakes?
LAWRENCE: “We’re right there with winning these games. We’ve said that the whole season. No matter
who you’re playing, but especially when you’re playing a great team like Kansas City, it’s hard to overcome those. Right now, with where we’re at, we need to make those plays and keep that momentum. That’s where we’re at right now. You look at the locker room after the game and everyone believes in what we’re doing, everybody believes in where we’re heading, we know that. It’s still frustrating when you feel like you’re in these games and you don’t make all of these plays that you have to make to win. It’s the same story we’ve talked about. It’s always our message that it’s about us. The things that we can control, we have to execute. The defense is going to make some plays, but as far as alignment, execution, hitting the easy throws, whatever it is, we have to hit those. That’s always going to be the message to control what you can control. They’re always going to make some plays but we need to be better on execution from our stand point.”

Q: You had some momentum at the end of the first half and going into the second half before it turned
back around to them. What happened there?

LAWRENCE: “That just goes back to the missed opportunities. We talked about field position and we had
some great opportunities to maximize that field position early on. We essentially stole a possession from
them and had an opportunity to get some points or score a touchdown, that’s obviously ideal. We had to
punt it and we didn’t get any points there. Later on, I think we had two or three turnovers today which
was huge for us. It was huge to be able to get those possessions, but we just weren’t able to capitalize on
them. That’s the biggest thing. You have to play complementary football. I thought at times, there were
moments where we all played great in certain moments, but we have to do that more, be on the same
page and complement each other more. If the defense gets a stop, we have to go score. If we have to
punt, we have to get a stop. That’s what great teams do. We’re close, but we just have to start doing more
of that.”

Q: Were you aware that the onside kick was coming at the beginning of the game?
LAWRENCE: “We knew there was a chance that was going to happen. You never know what Coach [Head
Coach Doug Pederson] or whoever is going to decide or if they’re going to change their mind. I kind of had an idea of what was happening, but I didn’t want to be over there with my helmet on, making it obvious. We executed it great. That’s where you’re kicking yourself because we get the ball around their 45-yard line, and we didn’t get any points out of it.”

Q: Can you talk about Patrick Mahomes’ ability to just pull things out of thin air?
LAWRENCE: “Yeah, you’re sitting over there, looking at the play, you’ve got everybody covered down field
and the pocket is closing in but he rolls out of there and makes a play. It’s part of what makes him great.
He’s a great player. It’s just going to make our team better because obviously, playing against guys like
that is tough. I thought we did some really good things on defense today like created some turnovers, got the ball back for us. He’s a great player. You’re never going to completely stop those guys, but I thought our guys did a good job of taking advantage of some opportunities to make it harder on him. They did some good things on offense for sure.”

Q: Heading into the bye week, do you feel like you’re in as much control of yourself and your offense as
you’ve been since entering the NFL?
LAWRENCE: “I feel really good with where we’re at as far as just being on the same page, especially myself
and the receivers. I feel like we’ve taken some big steps the last couple of weeks. Our group up front has
done a great job all year. There’s a lot of stuff to learn. There are still too many missed opportunities in
the passing game and run game, all over the place with plays that we can make. We’re going to look at
those. I know we’re heading in the right direction, I’m confident in that. If you want to win these games,
you can’t miss too many opportunities and we did that today.”

Q: How valuable has Christian Kirk been for you guys?
LAWRENCE: “He’s been awesome. I think the way that we communicate, the way he communicates with
me when he sees things whether that’s in practice, during the week in our prep for whoever, or if it’s
during the game. There was some pressure stuff today where it was all about me and him being on the
same page. You see a lot of those big conversions and those quick throws that we have because I know
how he’s going to be and how he’s going to react based on the look. We’re building on that and it’s really
clicking right now. It’s something that we have to build on. I feel like I’m getting there with all of our guys, too. I feel in that aspect, we’re in a really good place. We just have to keep building on that and doing that because that’s really important.”

Week 10
Jaguars Players

CISCO: “Absolutely. All game I felt that way. There were times when we had a chance to swing the
momentum and get off the field on third down and do some stuff like that and we didn’t get a chance to.
And that’s what you’ve got to do to beat these teams.”
Q: If you came in here and got three turnovers and steal a possession on an onside kick, are you surprised
the way this result came giving those statistics?
CISCO: “It happens. It happens sometimes. We’ve got to capitalize on every opportunity we get,
offensively and defensively. That’s what we’ve got to do.”
Q: How good is Mahomes in live action?
CISCO: “He’s as advertised. He’s able to make all the throws and keep me on my toes and keeping my
depth because you don’t want to end up in a position where your back is to him.”

OLB JOSH ALLEN
Q: Did Patrick Mahomes have too much time to pass today?
ALLEN: “We knew, coming into the game, what kind of quarterback he was. He did as such. Up front,
including myself, we didn’t win one on ones. Other than that, he made plays when he needed to make
plays.”
Q: Do you feel like your defense is getting the pressure it needs to?
ALLEN: “No, but guys have stepped up today. Andre Cisco had a huge game, so when you say we are not
getting better, you can just look at that. We have a bye week this week. We’ll get our bodies back right
and come back ready to go against Baltimore.”
Q: How difficult is it to go against someone like Patrick Mahomes, who can do things other NFL
quarterbacks can’t?
ALLEN: “He is a generational quarterback. He makes plays when he needs to make plays, and he gets the
balls and plays to the playmakers and bada-bing, bada-boom.”
Q: What can you say about the game Andre Cisco had?
ALLEN: “Big game, huge game, confidence booster, that’s the game he needed to have, and that’s the
game he told us he was going to have. Our energy was around him. Great game for Cisco, I know he is
going to continue to grow and continue to motivate guys around us. He is going to continue to make plays
around us.”
Q: Can you comment on him making two huge hits that avoided targeting penalties? They were legal hits
and he led with his left shoulder instead of going after the head.
ALLEN: “He is a smart player. He does what he is coached. He came up with a lot of great plays today.
He is going to continue to grind. That is the type of player he is. We knew can make those plays.
Q: How much does Patrick Mahomes stretch the field?

ALLEN: “For him and the whole offense, I think they did a great job. Kudos to them and Patrick is a
generational quarterback, but at the end of the day, I think we really beat ourselves because we were in
position to make plays and just didn’t. Kudos to them, hopefully those guys stay healthy and continue to
do what they do.”
Q: You won the turnover battle and got an onside kick, wouldn’t you have signed up for that any day of
the week?
ALLEN: “Most definitely. Then, when you play against a team like that, you can’t make, what coach
Peterson talks about, the little mistakes. Mistakes can cost us the game, and we had way too many of
them. We have to move onto the next one.”

RB TRAVIS ETIENNE JR.
Q: Were the Chiefs locked in on you early today?
ETIENNE: “Most definitely, they didn’t want us getting outside. We, probably, should have done more
insides zones.”
Q: How much did it hurt to not get any points off of the onside kick?
ETIENNE: “It really hurt, but I feel like that’s football. We took a chance and made a great play. We have
to come out with a way to score points and get three on the board or something. With an extra
possession, we have to find a way to get anything right there, and we just didn’t and that’s what it is. It
doesn’t do any good to sulk on it.”
Q: Does this feel like the same old story with making plays but not getting enough points on the board?
ETIENNE: “We are not here to justify a loss or make ourselves feel better about anything. I feel like we
have to put the feelings to bed and find ways to get better. Obviously, people are going to key on me
going into the future and I have to find a way to make something out of nothing. I have to continue to get
better.”

WR CHRISTIAN KIRK
Q: What do you make of the offense being able to score but missing out when you needed it the most?
KIRK: “You kind of hit it on the head. The times when we needed to score, we missed our opportunities.
The first drive, one of those plays is on me, I have to make the catch. We were not able to capitalize on
recovering the kickoff. Then you get down and get some penalties and stuff like that. We just were not
able to capitalize. It is always encouraging. I feel like we have been able to do it all year. We get into
those got-to-have-it situations and put together a drive and give ourselves a chance. We have been able
to do it, but we have to do it on a more consistent basis.”
Q: Was there anything the Chiefs were doing to limit your scoring chances?

KIRK: “They have a great defensive front, a great defense in general. They were getting some pressure
and doing some things upfront that limited us from getting the run-game going, getting Travis [Etienne]
going. Anytime that happens, it hurts us a little bit. We have to rely on the pass a little bit more and I
think that also goes back to shooting ourselves in the foot. There were some penalties that were there
late that got us out of opportunities to go put the ball in the endzone.”
Q: How frustrating was it to win the turnover battle and get the onside kick and not win this game?
KIRK: “Very, especially when you are playing a team like this. You can’t expect to come in and play a
crappy first half and expect to come out here, in the second half, and come away with a win. That’s a
playoff team, year-in and year-out. For us to get to that
