Postgame: Jags vs Chargers, Jags Head Coach Doug Marrone

(Opening statement) “Like I said, we tried to play this game and make it a short game and took the first series, went down there, took time off the clock.  Unfortunately, we came away with just three points instead of seven, and then they wound up scoring on seven of their next eight drives, which obviously puts us in a tough situation.  Like I told the players, obviously I’m responsible for wins and losses, so that’s on me and we made too many mistakes.  There were mistakes all over the place.  That goes on coaches and players and everyone, so we’ve got to take a good look.  We’ve got three games left, and no one is coming to help us.  Everyone is playing.  So, we’ve got to keep playing and find a way to get this done.  Obviously, it’s a poor performance all around, starting with me, the coaches and then, obviously, our on-field performance.”

(On if he feels the effort was there on defense) “Yeah, there was a lot of busted coverages.  There were busted things, and those are the guys that we have, and we’ve got to do a better job. It’s a little bit on both.  You can’t just say it’s just the players.  It’s us as coaches, too.  We try to put them in good positions.  We work on things during the week, but if you don’t have that performance on the field, that is a reflection on everyone.”

(On what makes changing this losing streak so difficult) “It starts with me.  I haven’t done a good enough job. Trying to do different things, trying to figure it out and at every point, we’re either making mistakes or not coaching it well and not getting it done.  At the end of the day, that’s really what it is, everyone in a total effort just not being able to execute and get it done.”

(On if he felt the effort was there all 60 minutes) “I thought so, from where I was looking at. You’re always going to get questioned when you lose.  People make mistakes and if you are saying mistakes are a lack of effort, then yeah, there’s a lack of effort out there if that’s what you are relating mistakes to.  Again, it’s on the film, it’s on the tape, so whatever is out there is out there.”

(On what he tells the team after five straight losses) “They’re professionals. Everyone is playing for something.  Everyone is playing to maintain themselves in this league, play in this league, coach in this league, whatever it may be.  They are professionals. They understand that.  It doesn’t look good.  We’ve got to coach better and play better or else this league will eat you up and spit you out.”

(On if he had a discussion postgame with Jaguars ownership and executives about his job status) “No.  I didn’t.  I think it’s one of those things where I don’t look for that.  I don’t go search for that.  I just figure I always look at it as a privilege to be able to be in in a position like this.  Eventually, if you don’t win enough games and you think it’s better to go with someone else, then obviously that’s out of my hands.  I just keep doing the best job I can and just keep fighting.  It is what it is.”

(On if he’s experiencing frustration) “I don’t have that opportunity.  That’s the problem.  I don’t have the opportunity to show poor leadership or show frustration.  When you say frustration, I’m talking about negative.  Obviously, you get upset and you become competitive.  That’s probably a better word.  With the frustration, if there is something good that can come out of it, then I would show it.  I don’t know right now if anything good would come out of it.  I’m trying to make sure we do a better job coaching, I do a better job, and get these guys performing better.”
