OWLS IN REVIEW

The Owls prevailed in a back-and-forth affair with Miami on Tuesday. The lead changed hands three times. Nolan Schanuel homered twice and drove in four runs. Mitchell Hartigan’s RBI single in the seventh inning put the Owls ahead 6-5. The bullpen once again came through in the clutch with scoreless outings from Sam DrumhellerMarc DeGusipe, and Robert Wegielnik. It was the first victory over the Hurricanes since May 2021.

Through eight games, Schanuel’s .419 average is a team high. Jackson Ross sits close behind with a .394 mark at the plate including four home runs and 10 RBI. Newcomer Christian Adams homered for the third time on Tuesday and is hitting .333. Adams leads the Owls with 12 RBI.

On the pitching side, the bullpen has had a major impact with just nine earned runs allowed in 38 innings. Wegielnik got the final two outs on Tuesday to earn his first save. The Owls have benefited from the additions of C.J. Williams and Brandon Smith so far.

THE OPPONENT

UCONN went 50-16 last season and advanced all the way to the Super Regional where they lost a winner-take-all game against Stanford in Palo Alto. A veteran squad is led by head coach Jim Penders in his 20th season. Junior outfielder Korey Morton is the name to watch at the plate. Morton was First Team All-Big East in 2022 after hitting .411.

Ian Cooke, Jack Sullivan, and Andrew Sears are the projected starters on the mound. Cooke went five innings last week against Cal Poly. Sullivan finished with a 0.79 ERA last season as a freshman reliever. Sears is a transfer from Rhode Island College (DIII). He last pitched on Feb. 19 against Ohio State.

The Huskies will be fresh having not played a game since last Saturday when they fell 4-2 to California.

OPPONENT HISTORY

Florida Atlantic and UCONN have met six times with the Owls holding a 4-2 edge. The last matchup was in 2015 when new FAU pitching coach Jordan Tabakman took the mound for the Huskies. Tabakman delivered six scoreless innings in the series finale, but the Owls tagged the UCONN bullpen for five including a walk-off hit from new FAU assistant coach Ricky Santiago.

UPCOMING

Florida Atlantic will head to Gainesville for two midweek games against the No. 7-ranked Gators in the Swamp. First pitch on Tuesday and Wednesday is scheduled for 6 p.m. each day.
