Owls Take on First Road Game at Miami

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team (1-0) will take on its first road contest of the 2020-21 season at Miami (2-0) Thursday night. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m. at the Watsco Center with the broadcast available on ACC Extra.
  About the Owls

  • FAU is coming off a season opening win against North Florida on Monday night, 93-81. The Owls claimed that victory behind all five starters scoring double digits and reaching 90+ points for the first time since 2018
  • Head coach Jim Jabir is in his fourth season at the helm with his 2020-21 team being made up of 13 returners and four newcomers. Out of the 13 returners, four of those Owls were everyday starters during the 2019-20 season
  • This year’s team is comprised of one redshirt freshman, eight sophomores, six juniors, one senior and one graduate student
  • Allie Tylka leads the Owls after one game with 19 points per game. Iggy Allen follows with 18 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals per game. Astou Gaye is the leading rebounder (13 rebounds per game), while Alexa Zaph leads the pack with five assists
  • Allen will make her return to her alma matter at Miami, but in a different uniform (of course)

  History Against the Canes

  • Thursday night will be the 18th meeting between the two teams
  • FAU is looking for its first program win over the Hurricanes, trailing in the series, 0-17
  • The last time the two teams squared off was at the UM Thanksgiving Tournament in 2012. Miami won that game 76-61
  • FAU is 0-4 at home and 0-13 away in the series

  Scouting Miami

  • Miami was picked to finish 10th in the Atlantic Coast Conference, as voted on by the league’s head coaches. The blue ribbon panel have the Canes rounding out in 11th
  • The Canes are coming off a win over North Florida, beating the Ospreys 81-39 on Saturday night at the Watsco Center
  • The Canes are 2-0 after wins over Jacksonville (74-58) and UNF. UM is coming off a 15-15 record last season, losing to Clemson in the opening round of the ACC Tournament, 71-56
  • Kelsey Marshall is the Hurricanes’ leading scorer with 17.5 points per game
  • Destiny Harden (14.0 PPG) and Moulayna Johnson Sid (11.5 points per game) follow while Brianna Jackson leads the team in rebounds with 8.5 rebounds per game

  Last Time Out

  • The Owls took down North Florida in FAU’s home opener, 93-81
  • Each of FAU’s five starters reached double digits in scoring
  • Tylka led the team with a career-high 19 points
  • Allen had an impressive debut for the Owls with a career-high 18 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals

FAU will play its final non-conference road game at Florida on Monday at 8 p.m. with the game being broadcast on SEC Network. The Owls’ next home game will be against Florida Memorial on Friday, Dec. 18 at 5 p.m.
