Owls Sweeps DH, Head into C-USA Play

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Playing in their final contests prior to this weekend’s Conference USA opener, the Florida Atlantic University Owls showcased all aspects of their game, and nearly the entire team, with a doubleheader sweep of Stonehill College, on Tuesday. FAU won the first game 11-1 and the second was a 6-1 win.

GAME ONE

FAU used five runs in the third and six runs in the fifth to run rule the Skyhawks 11-1. The Owls used 16 players and celebrated a walk-off grand slam by senior Riley EnnisGabby Sacco, who tossed a no-hitter last week and is the reigning C-USA Pitch of the Week drew the start and earned the win after four innings of work.

NOTES/NOTABLE

  • The Owls scored 11 runs on 11 hits
  • With 11 players making a plate appearance, two Owls, Sara Berthiaume and Zoey Jones, recorded multiple hits, both going 2-for-3
  • With the Owls leading 7-1 and needing two runs to fulfill the mercy rule, Riley Ennis was called to the plate, belting a walk-off grand slam
  • Along with Ennis’ homer, Berthiaume and Olivia Peterson had doubles and Sommer Baker added a triple
  • Sacco drew the start and moved to 8-2 on the year after four-innings of work. She was charged with an earned run, struck out six and walked two. Sacco gave way to newcomer Summer Clark, who pitched a scoreless fifth  

GAME TWO

The Owls scored twice in the bottom of the first, the only runs they would need, and continued their offensive day with 10 hits, including doubles by Zoey JonesMaya Amm and Caryssa Orland as well as triples by Jesiana Mora and Jones. FAU used three pitchers to close down the Skyhawk offense. Lynn Gardner tossed four innings, struck out seven and was charged with one earned run. Gardner was lifted in the fifth for Ainsley Lambert, who threw two innings, struck out three and walked one. The final inning of work came from Kelsey Endress, who also got a strikeout giving each of the three hurlers at least one strikeout in the game and 10 in total versus Stonehill. Endress was the fifth Owl pitcher on the day to get work.

NOTES/NOTABLES

  • 13 Owl hitters recorded a plate appearance
  • Leadoff hitter Cammeo Presutti was 3-for-4 on the day with two RBI and two runs scored
  • Jesiana Mora and Zoey Jones had multiple hits, with Mora having a 2-for-4 night, including a RBI and a run scored while Jones was 2-for-3 with two runs scored

NEXT UP

FAU is scheduled to open their C-USA schedule this Friday, March 10 at 6 p.m. at UAB. The two teams will then play Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
