Owls set to host 14th Thanksgiving Classic

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team (2-1) is set to host its 14th Thanksgiving Classic on November 25 & 26, welcoming Butler, Binghamton, and Sacred Heart to Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET on Friday against Binghamton (4-1), and 4 p.m. ET on Saturday against Sacred Heart (1-4).

SCOUTING FAU

Head coach Jennifer Sullivan is in her second season leading the Owls, collecting a 7-26 record throughout her pair of seasons in Boca Raton. FAU enters Monday’s contest with a 2-1 record so far in 2022-23, and the Owls are just coming off a 61-35 win over the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish.

Aniya Hubbard paces the Owls’ offense, leading the team in scoring and averaging 11.3 points per game, including a season-best 15-point performance in the Owls last outing against Palm Beach Atlantic. Janetta Rozentale leads FAU and ranks second in C-USA in double-doubles with two has also averaged double figures, scoring 10.7 points per game through the first three contests this season. Rozentale has also led the team in rebounds, assists and steals, posting a team-leading seven rebounds per game, 3.33 assists per game, and 1.67 steals per game this season. Dyllan Hanna and Hubbard are tied for a team-leading three blocks each this season

LAST TIME OUT: VS. PALM BEACH ATLANTIC

The Owls earned their largest win of the season in their last outing, earning a 26-point win, 61-35, against the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish. Four Owls posted double-digit performances in the win, led by Aniya Hubbard, who scored a season-high 15 points, the most by an Owl this seaso Rozentale posted her second double-double of the season, tallying 10 points and 10 rebounds against the Sailfish. After a slow start to the season from the free-throw line, the Owls had their best game so far at the charity stripe, knocking down a season-best 22 free throws, shooting 88 percent from the line. The Owls played efficiently in the second half, shooting 40.66 percent from the field, including a 42.86 percent clip in the third quarter. FAU also recorded a season-high 50 rebounds, in addition to collecting a season-best nine steals. The Owls dominated in the paint, outscoring the Sailfish 30-16 in the key.

SCOUTING BINGHAMTON

Binghamton is off to its best start since the 2019-20 season, opening the 2022-23 season with a 4-1 record entering this weekend’s Thanksgiving Classic. The Bearcats are most recently coming off a 75-72 win over Canisius College. Binghamton is in its 5th season under head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord, who has amassed a 52-59 record in Binghamton, and a 129-196 overall record over her 12-year coaching career at Binghamton and Weber State.

The Bearcats have four players averaging double digits this season, led by Ella Wanzer, averaging 11.8 points per game, as well as Clare Traeger, Denai Bowman, and Genevieve Coleman, who are averaging 11.4, 11, and 10.4 points per game each, respectively. Traeger has been the Bearcats leader on the glass, averaging a double-double with a team-best 10.8 rebounds per contest this season. Jadyn Weltz has dished out a team-leading 23 assists this season, while Bowman has led the Bearcats with 14 steals and 12 blocks in 2022-23.

SCOUTING SACRED HEART

Sacred Heart enter this weekend’s Thanksgiving Classic 1-4 and is just coming off a 65-56 loss against Iona. The Pioneers are in their 10th season under head coach Jessica Mannetti, who has led Sacred Heart to a 128-137 record over her decade-long career in Fairfield.

The Pioneers are paced by Ny’Ceara Pryor and Sajada Bonner, averaging 14.8 and 10.4 points per game this season. Pryor also leads the Pioneers in steals with 22 and despite being the team’s scoring leader, has dished out a team-best 16 assists so far in 2022-23. Kelsey Wood has pulled down a team-leading six rebounds per game, while Carly Stroemel has secured a team-best seven blocks through five games this season.

SERIES HISTORY

This weekend marks the first-ever meeting between the Owls and Binghamton and Sacred Heart.
