Owls Prepped for Tulsa and SMU

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic volleyball continues its AAC home slate this weekend as the Owls welcome the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (10-6, 3-2) on Friday, Oct. 6 and the SMU Mustangs (10-6, 4-1) on Sunday, Oct. 8 to Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.

Beckham has tallied a team-leading 136 kills, while Ru leads the Owls in attack percentage, hitting for an impressive .335 through the Owls 16 games this season.
  • The Owls run their offense through two setters in Victoria Hensley and Noelle Stephens. Hensley boasts a team-leading 442 assists, averaging 8.04 assists per set, while Stephens has dished out 176 assists, averaging 3.83 assists per set this season.
  • Florida Atlantic’s back row is led by the Owls’ first-year Libero, Isabelle Northam, who has tallied an impressive 234 digs, averaging 4.25 digs per set.
  • At the net, the Owls are led by Ru, Beckham, and Lauryn Green. Ru leads the Owls with 43 blocks, averaging 0.93 blocks per set, while Beckham has a team second-best 35 blocks, averaging 0.65 blocks per set this season. Lauryn Green leads the Owls in blocks per set with 1.03 and has tallied a team third-best 34 blocks in 2023.

SCOUTING TULSA

  • The Golden Hurricane enters this weekend at 10-6 on the season and 3-2 in AAC play. Tulsa is just coming off a four-set and five-set win against the North Texas Mean Green.
  • As a team, the Golden Hurricane lead the AAC in total attacks (2,348), attacks per set (39.13), and digs (1,053).
  • Offensively, Tulsa is led by Cassaday Kayley, who boasts a team-leading 5.40 kills per set and 5.75 points per set, while hitting .275 on the season.
  • The Golden Hurricane’s offense is run through Kalsu Avery, who has posted a team-leading 586 assists, averaging 9.77 assists per set.
  • Defensively, the Golden Hurricane’s back row is led by Marta Pecalli and Avery Kalsu, who are averaging 4.32 and 3.05 digs per set, respectively. Tulsa is led at the net by Camryn Lingenbrink and Arianna Mongare, who have tallied 1.08 and 0.93 blocks per set in 2023.

SCOUTING SMU

  • SMU enters this weekend at 10-6 overall and 4-1 in league play. The Mustangs are just coming off a split weekend in which SMU earned a straight-set win against Wichita State, before falling in their first league match of the season in a four-set battle against the Shockers.
  • The Mustangs feature four hitters with two or more kills, led by Natalie Perdue, Emma Clothier, Jamison Wheeler, and Naya Shime, averaging 2.96, 2.69, 2.64, and 2.61 kills per set, respectively.
  • SMU’s lead setter is Celia Cullen, who as tallied a team-leading 592 assists and is averaging 10.03 assists per set so far this season.
  • Sinalauli’I Uluave leads the Mustangs’ back row with a team-best 198 digs and averaging 3.41 digs per set.
  • At the net, SMU is led by Clothier, who boasts a team-leading 63 blocks, averaging 1.07 per set, followed by Shime with 41 blocks, averaging 0.69 blocks per set in 2023.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Friday’s match marks the second all-time meeting between the Owls and the Golden Hurricane. Tulsa won the only meeting between the two teams, earning a 3-0 win in Boca Raton on Oct. 11, 2013.
  • Sunday’s match marks the first-ever meeting between Florida Atlantic and SMU.

UP NEXT

  • Following this weekend’s matches, the Owls will head back on the road on Friday, Oct. 13 as they head to Houston, Texas to take on the Rice Owls. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
