Owls fall in battle at UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Florida Atlantic women’s basketball (9-2, 2-0 C-USA) opened up its C-USA road slate on Thursday, falling in a 75-47 battle against the UAB Blazers (9-5, 1-3 C-USA) inside Bartow Arena.

“All I can say is our performance tonight was disappointing,” said head coach Jennifer Sullivan. “Defending UAB from the three-point line was a major key to our game plan and we did not do a good job in that area. The next big step for our team will be beating good teams on the road. We look forward to another opportunity to do that on Saturday.”

After UAB’s opening score, Jada Moore connected on a mid-range jumper off an assist from Aniya Hubbard to tie the game at two. The Blazers scored five to retake the lead 7-2, but the Owls responded on a free throw from Janeta Rozentale and an Alexa Zaph layup to keep things within two at 7-5 with 7:10 to play in the first. UAB scored six to retake an eight-point lead, 13-5, but back-to-back Rozentale layups brought the Owls back within four, 13-9, at the 5:25-minute mark. However, the Blazers went on an 11-4 run over the final five minutes of the first to take a 24-13 lead after the opening frame.

The Owls opened the second with a 7-3 run to cut back into the UAB lead, 27-20, with 5:47 remaining in the first half, but FAU couldn’t get anything else to fall in the period as the Blazers scored 13 to bring the game to 40-20 at the half.

After a 51-24 lead, FAU mounted an 11-6 run, capped off by a Jada Moore layup at the 30-second mark of the third period to make it 57-35, but a Blazer 3-pointer closed out the period to bring the game to 60-35 with 10 minutes to play.

FAU outscored UAB 12-8 over the first five minutes of play in the fourth to bring the deficit down to 68-47 with 4:44 to play, but UAB scored seven unanswered as the Owls shooting went cold over the final four minutes of play to bring the game to its 75-47 final.
