Owls Drop Rubber Game, Series to Mean Green

DENTON, Tx. – In the rubber game of the three-game series, the FAU softball team was defeated by North Texas, 7-3, on Sunday.

The Owls drop the series after winning game one on Friday. FAU now stands at an even 15-15 on the season and 4-2 in Conference USA play, while North Texas improved to 16-6 and 5-1 in the conference.

North Texas got on the scoreboard first with a two-spot in the bottom of the first inning. The Mean Green blew the game open with five runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-0 lead.

FAU did not go away easily however, putting up two runs in the sixth and one run in the seventh. Cameryn Orland led off the sixth with a pinch-hit single. After Cammeo Presutti reached on an error, Sara Berthiaume delivered an RBI single through the right side. Berthiaume leads FAU in hitting with a .388 batting average.

Jalynn Ford was next up for the Owls as a pinch hitter, and Ford ripped a double down the left field line that scored Presutti. The two-bagger was Ford’s first extra base hit of the year and her second RBI. In the seventh inning, Kaitlyn Cunningham drove an RBI double to right center that scored Orland.

Lynn Gardner took the loss in the circle for FAU. Gardner dipped to 8-5 on the season and went five innings with five earned runs and seven total runs allowed. Donnie Gobourne pitched a clean sixth inning in relief of Gardner and struck out the side.

Nine different Owls recorded a hit, with Olivia Peterson, Cunningham and Ford tallying a double each.

The Owls will host Central Arkansas for a Tuesday night doubleheader, beginning at 5 p.m. on March 22.
