CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University baseball team heads to Coral Gables on Wednesday to continue its season series with No. 17 Miami. The Owls won the first meeting 6-5 against the Canes at home back on Feb. 28 powered by two home runs from Nolan Schanuel.

OWLS IN REVIEW

The Owls were held in check in the opening weekend of Conference USA against UTSA. After an 8-2 defeat on Friday night, Saturday’s action was washed out due to weather. Instead, the teams played two seven-inning contests on Sunday. The Roadrunners won both by scores of 7-2 and 5-3.

THE OPPONENT

Miami has improved its National Ranking since the last meeting with the Owls. UM was No. 22 then but after a win over No. 6 Florida and two wins over No. 19 NC State, the Canes are now No. 17. This past weekend, they swept Virginia Tech by scores of 4-3, 21-6, and 12-9.

Junior infielder CJ Kayfus will be one to watch on Wednesday. The Wellington, Fla. native went 12-for-16 at the plate in four games last week including three home runs and eight RBI. Kayfus was recognized as ACC Player of the Week as well as Collegiate Baseball and Perfect Game/Rawlings National Player of the Week.

On the mound, Carlos Lequerica is expected to make the start for Miami. The senior faced the Owls once last season as a member of FIU. He earned the win in a start on April 30 after going seven innings with four hits and three earned runs allowed. Two of the four hits were home runs off the bat of Gabriel Rincones, Jr.

OPPONENT HISTORY

The Owls will be looking to win consecutive games in the same season against the Canes for the first time since 2018. FAU will also be trying for its first win in Coral Gables since May 18, 2021.

These two sides will meet twice more in the regular season after Wednesday: April 19 in Boca Raton and April 25 in Coral Gables.
