Altamonte Springs, Fla. – Lynn University’s women’s tennis team continued its historic 2019 campaign on Friday, downing the second-seeded University of Indianapolis 4-0 in a battle of Division II’s only remaining undefeated programs in the National Championship Semifinal. This will be the program’s 10th appearance in the final and its second in the last three seasons.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

·       For the third straight day, the Fighting Knights secured the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 slots to get out to an early advantage.

·       Leolia Jeanjean and Ulyana Grib made quick work of their Greyhound opponents, blanking UIndy’s No. 1 doubles team, 6-0. The Italian connection of Georia Pigato and Eleonora Liga clinched the doubles point a short time later with a 6-3 triumph.

·       Liga followed up her doubles success with a dominating performance at No. 4 singles, dispatching her competition 6-1, 6-0.

·       Grib grinded out a win at No. 2 singles, winning 6-4 in a tight set one before showing her strength in set two with a convincing 6-1 result.

·       Pigato delivered the match-clinching win for the Fighting Knights at the No. 6 slot with a 6-2, 6-4 victory.

·       Federica Mordegan was well on her way to a victory at the No. 3 spot, taking the opening set 6-4 and holding a 4-3 lead before the tilt ended.

·       The singles action was much more competitive as UIndy had the lead at Nos. 1 and 5 before Pigato’s win put the finishing touches on the Fighting Knights’ victory.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

·       For the first time, all 16 teams at the NCAA National Championships received a seed coming into the tournament. Lynn is the No. 3 seed and UIndy is the No. 2 seed.

·       The Blue and White defeated Nova Southeastern last week to win the South Region II bracket, clinching the team’s 20th appearance at the NCAA National Championships in the past 23 years.

·       Lynn has won the NCAA National Championship three times with six runner-up finishes.

·       Starting with the SSC Championship, the Fighting Knights have notched six straight 4-0 wins.

·       Jeanjean improves to 28-0 in doubles action this season. Her 28 doubles victories are the most-ever in a season in program history.

·       The Blue and White women advance to the National Championship for the first time since 2017 in search of their first title since 2001.

·       For just the third time in history, the final will feature an All-Sunshine State Conference matchup.
