Obando Named ITA South Region Most Improved Senior

TEMPE, Ariz. – Officials from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association have announced that Nova Southeastern women’s tennis fifth-year senior Daniela Obando has received the ITA South Region Most Improved Senior Award for her All-American final campaign with the Sharks.

Just completing his fifth year leading the program, Doug Neagle has registered a 62-33 record coaching the Sharks and Obando has been a huge part of all of the Sharks’ rise to national prominence – she was in Neagle’s very first recruiting class to NSU and has been a staple of the lineup.

“Nice award for Danny to go out with,” Neagle said. “She had some huge wins for us this past spring and I’m extremely happy for her!”

Obando (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) earned ITA All-America singles accolades for 2021 after finishing the shortened season with a No. 19 ITA ranking and a 7-2 singles record on the third court. Obando also partnered with Isabella Lowrey for the best NSU doubles record, going 6-1 with Lowrey at No. 2 doubles. She earned second team All-SSC honors in both singles and doubles and brought her career SSC honors count to six for her career.

Since coming to NSU from Andragogy International Universe (AIU) High School in Miami, she’s collected a 77.7 overall win percentage, gone 42-12 in singles and 45-13 doubles. She provided the clinching match in the 2019 SSC Championships semifinal to defeat defending National Champion Barry and also was a decisive clinching point at the 2020 ITA DII Indoor Championships. She was 6-2 in singles and 10-1 in doubles with a limited 2020 season before making the call to use her COVID-caused extra eligibility to take on one more year with the Sharks.
