Commuter rail may come to Oakland Park

Commuter rail will play an important role in Broward County’s strategy to improve transportation and mobility. The Broward Commuter Rail Project would operate on the FEC railroad corridor and provide commuter access between Aventura and Deerfield Beach.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) technical team has analyzed potential train stop locations on the commuter rail and recommends that one be in downtown Oakland Park, between 36th – 38th Streets, on NE 12th Avenue.

Oakland Park has pursued the goal of a train stop in our downtown for more than a decade. The City Commission passed a resolution of support for a train stop in 2010 and 2019. In a recent citywide survey, 77% of residents support the idea of a stop in Oakland Park. More than 245 members of our community have signed a letter of support for the commuter rail project.

Oakland Park notes

Oakland Park is welcoming the Wander Shop to Oakland Park. Located at 3548 NE 12 Ave. in the heart of downtown, The Wander Shop offers a curated collection of women’s clothing, goods, and accessories. This a good place to find gift for someone or if you want to treat yourself, you’re sure to find something full of good vibes. Oakland Park has close to 1,200 businesses?

Oakland Park is mourning the passing of city employee long time city employee Tom Casselberry. Tom was a dedicated city employee who served the Oakland Park community for 33 years, most recently as a Utilities Technician in the wastewater division of the Public Works Department. Tom will be greatly missed by his family and his friends and colleagues at the City of Oakland Park.

Each year Oakland Park looks forward to hosting its signature special events, including Oktoberfest. Given the number of COVID cases in the community, city leaders have made the difficult decision to suspend plans for future city events. This avoids incurring costly expenses for canceling event contracts on short notice. City leaders apologize for any inconvenience and look forward to being able to resume city events as soon as possible.
