Oakland Park Fire Rescue Team wins honors

From David Volz

The City of Oakland Park’s Fire Rescue Extrication Team recently competed in the North American Vehicle Rescue Association (NAVRA) National Rescue Challenge. The team placed fifth in the Palm Beach State College Invitational on May 2 and 3 at Palm Beach State College’s Lake Worth Campus. NAVRA’s mission is to prepare today’s firefighters and road rescuers for the extrication challenges of tomorrow through training, education, and competition.

The team participated in a Limited Scenario competition, which simulates rescuing an individual from a vehicle without the use of hydraulic tools. They also participated in a Complex Scenario competition, which simulates rescuing two individuals using hydraulic tools. The scenario had two patients trapped in the vehicle; one was in critical condition and had to be removed from the vehicle within the first 10 minutes of the scenario, which was accomplished. The second patient was safely removed from the vehicle with 10 seconds to spare in the 30-minute scenario. In these extrication competitions, there are six team members who work closely together to safely remove the victim from the car.

A group of Oakland Park residents and volunteers participated in the April 29th Tree Giveaway. More than 25 volunteers and City staff helped distribute 568 free trees and shrubs to more than 140 residents and local business owners. Volunteers, including members of the City’s Beautification Advisory Board, helped hand out trees, load them into vehicles, and distribute information about tree care and proper planting.

The City of Oakland Park is excited to offer a variety of classes to help residents improve health and well-being. The program is part of a citywide effort to support Community Wellness and Recreation, which is a performance area in Oakland Park’s Strategic Plan. Experienced instructors will participate. Free classes are open to all levels, from beginner to advanced in areas such as meditation, cardio & walking, yoga flow, weight training, singing bowls, circuit training,
