NSU Women’s Track Wins UT Track Classic, Men Finish Third on Friday

TAMPA, Fla. – With the meet wrapping up just shy of midnight at Pepin Stadium, the Nova Southeastern track teams traveled to the UT Track Classic on Friday. The Sharks women topped the 10-team field to win the meet with 71 points, while the men’s team finished third with 44 points among 16 scored teams in the first road competition of the 2020 season.

RUNNING EVENTS
The hurdling events got the Sharks on the path to the top tier of the field in just the second event of the evening. Senior Ian Nieves was the victor in the men’s 400m hurdles, a tandem of first and second place with James Gamble, topping their section and then leading the final standings at 57.09 and 59.64, respectively. Running her first career collegiate hurdles, rookie Michelle Bigby finished third on the women’s side of the event at 1:10.66.

In the 100m dash, Lena Spindler ran the exact same time as her collegiate debut last week in Miramar, finishing third for the women at 12.58. Spindler also lopped 0.49 seconds off her 200m time from last week to finish fourth at 26.11.

In the longest sprint, freshman Jasmine Charles made her collegiate debut in the women’s 400m with a win and the team’s best time in the event this season at 1:01.61.

The Sharks registered 18 scoring performances between the two teams in individual running events, including three fourth-place, three fifth-place and four sixth-place finishes – on top of the four medalists.

RELAY EVENTS
The Sharks made a dominating showing in the sixth event with a men’s and women’s 4x100m first-place finish. The women’s squad of Destinee Fisher, Spindler, Nastassia Tyler and Michelle Greenstein topped the field in 49.47 – the best NSU women’s time since 2018. The men’s team of Gamble, Jared Robinson, Zaheem Anderson and Nieves collected gold in 44.53.
