No. 2 Florida Gymnastics Wins NC State Quad; Leanne Wong Equals Nation’s All-Around High

RALEIGH, N.C. –  No. 2 Florida gymnastics closed regular-season action winning the North Carolina State quad and sweeping the event titles in front of 3,284 at the James T. Valvano Arena at William Neal Reynolds Coliseum.

The Gators won the meet with a 197.975 team total, followed by Rutgers (196.40), NC State (195.95) and Penn (194.30).

Florida’s 13-0-1 record places the 2022 team among seven in the program’s 50-season history with an unbeaten regular-season record:
2022   13-0-1
2020   10-0
2007   15-0-1
1985   12-0
1983   12-0
1975   9-0
1974   4-0

THIS EVENING’S MEET:
The Gators were led on their opening event by freshman Leanne Wong’s near-perfect 9.975. That floor exercise mark equals her collegiate best set just about a month earlier versus LSU. Marks of 9.9 were earned by Megan Skaggs and Nya Reed.

Florida’s 49.60 total on vault equals the sixth-highest in program history. A pair of Gators each turned in near-perfect 9.975s to set their collegiate-bests to share the event win – senior Savannah Schoenherr and Wong.

Another near-perfect mark led the Gators on uneven bars. Senior Trinity Thomas equaled her season-best of 9.975 for the second time to claim the event win. Skaggs and Wong also posted 9.95s with that mark matching Skaggs collegiate best.

Wong’s second consecutive collegiate-best 9.95 won the evening balance beam title. The Gators also got marks of 9.925 from Sloane Blakely and a 9.90 from Skaggs.

It was quite a night for Wong. Her all-around total of 39.85 equals teammate Trinity Thomas for the nation’s 2022 high. It also equals the second-highest all-around in school history.

Skaggs was the all-around runner-up at 39.60.

THOMAS NOW FLORIDA CAREER EVENT WINS LEADER:
With her uneven bars win Friday, senior Trinity Thomas now takes sole possession of Florida Career Event Wins record.

Thomas moved past Bridget Sloan<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_sports_womens-2Dgymnastics_roster_bridget-2Dsloan_5091&d=DwIFJg&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=W59Z3xUHDeQYhLK3nDAYiO19UyVmOPGARbh54iwVWfX-tidWFjk3R0VAOsfgePN-&s=Au30Dmsf3u1GTjJO7-xSgvSR01Ah4OJdyBqXmoiokCw&e= > as Florida’s All-Time Career Events Wins leader.

As a Gators, Thomas has competed in 43 meets, winning at least one event title in 37 meets.

In the Gators 2022 home finale, Thomas claimed at least a share of each of the five event titles. It was her second event sweep of her career, with the first coming at LSU last season. She is the second Gator with two event sweeps during career and first since Kristen Guise<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__floridagators.com_sports_womens-2Dgymnastics_roster_kristen-2Dguise_5595&d=DwIFJg&c=sJ6xIWYx-zLMB3EPkvcnVg&r=o5LKAX7slotfFMyE71jI7L22NYBIi1-KbRGNSXudTPo&m=W59Z3xUHDeQYhLK3nDAYiO19UyVmOPGARbh54iwVWfX-tidWFjk3R0VAOsfgePN-&s=ReBd3zAQTw5Nk8jm88SOBh1djkeoSy4XGlzZpBOTzqw&e= > who registered two sweeps as a senior in 1996.

COACH ROWLAND SAID:

“Great night for the Gators. Great week for the Gators. We are enjoying the moment and knowing that we still have a lot left in the tank. And what’s great to see is that the Gators continued to get better in various ways throughout the season. And that’s all we can ask for.

“We’re winning the day and making the most of this opportunity. We are having a lot of fun together as a team. I think it’s definitely showing out on the competition floor. It is key to be supporting each other and keep it normal like they have been in practice. So it was a win tonight.”  – Florida Head Coach Jenny Rowland
