No. 19 Owls Will Face Butler on Thanksgiving Day

KISSIMMEE, Fla. –  The No. 19 Florida Atlantic University men’s basketball team (2-1) will head to Walt Disney World’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex to compete in the eight-team ESPN Events Invitational from Thursday, Nov. 23 to Sunday, Nov. 26.

The first matchup for the Owls will take place on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23, against Butler, with tip-off scheduled for 2:30 p.m. EST. The winner will take on the winner of the Penn State and Texas A&M matchup on Friday in the tournament’s semifinal for a chance to play in the championship round on Sunday. The losing team will take part in various consolation rounds during those days.

This marks the first meeting between FAU and Butler.

The Owls will look to regroup following their first loss of the season against Bryant in a 61-52 matchup. Junior guard Johnell Davis, currently a member of the Jerry West Award watch list, put forth his best game of the season so far with 17 points and a career-high tying 12 rebounds. Florida Atlantic as a team snagged a season-high 43 boards. Junior forward Giancarlo Rosado added 11 points on 4-7 shooting while redshirt sophomore guard Nick Boyd had an all-around performance with eight points, four assists, and three steals.

STATS & NOTES

  • Through three games, it is junior forward Vlad Goldin leading the team in scoring at 15.0 points per game on 63% shooting, fourth in the American Athletic Conference. He also leads the team with six steals (tied with Boyd) and six blocks
  • Three other players are scoring in double figures: Boyd (10.7), Brandon Weatherspoon (10), and Davis (10)
  • Davis leads the way in rebounds with 7 per game, the third most for a guard in the AAC
  • The Owls are holding opponents to 60 points per game, tied for the 26th best scoring defense in the nation, and have thus far held teams to under 40% shooting

The Owls will face No. 12 Texas A&M or Penn State on Friday, November 24. The opponent and tip-off time will be announced tomorrow afternoon.
