No. 19/20 Florida Atlantic Looks to Bounce Back at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Florida Atlantic University men’s basketball team’s historic 20-game winning streak was snapped at UAB on Thursday night in an 86-77 ballgame.

The Owls win streak stretched over the course of 83 days and began all the way back on Nov. 14 at Florida. The 20-game winning streak was by far the longest in school history (doubling up the previous record of 10) tied with Charleston for the longest winning streak in the nation this season and tied with Cincinnati’s 2001-02 streak for the third-longest in C-USA history. The Owls will look to start a new streak at Charlotte on Saturday.

OUR LAST MEETING

These two teams met exactly four weeks ago, when the Owls held on for a 71-67 victory. It appeared as if FAU would run away with it, holding a 53-33 lead with 13:57 to play, but a vicious Charlotte run cut it to as few as 66-64 with over a minute remaining. Alijah Martin drilled the dagger 3-pointer to put FAU ahead, 69-64 with 45 seconds remaining. Martin led the Owls that afternoon with 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting from 3-point range.

NEWS & NOTES

  • Charlotte and FAU rank second and third, respectively in Conference USA in scoring defense, holding their opponents to 61.4 and 64.5 points per game. FAU ranks second in opponent field goal percentage (40.2%) and third in opponent 3-point percentage (32.9%)
  • Despite the Owls’ setback against the Blazers on Thursday night, FAU guard Nick Boyd put forth a career-high 18 points. Boyd knocked down four 3-pointers to lead the Owls from behind the arc for the ninth time this season. Boyd also added seven rebounds and three assists
  • On the season, Boyd is FAU’s leading 3-point shooter at a rate of 44.3% from long range. He is additionally fourth on the team in scoring (9.8 ppg.) and fourth in rebounding (4.3 rpg.)
  • This season, the Owls have registered more assists than their opponents in 21 of the 23 games (20-1) and have forced more turnovers in 12 games (11-1)
  • Against UAB, the Owls were outshot by the Blazers 45.0% – 37.3% from the floor and 30 % – 22.2% from 3-point range
  • That has not happened much this season, as FAU has won the field goal percentage battle in 18 of the 23 games, in which the Owls are 18-0. In the 3-point battle, FAU is 11-0 when shooting a higher percentage than its opponents and 18-1 when making more threes than its opponents
  • Owl fifth-year senior guard Michael Forrest is climbing the all-time school record books. Forrest is only one 3-pointer from tying the program record of 287, set by Greg Gantt who played from 2009-13
  • Forrest also passed Craig Buchanan for fourth place all-time in scoring in program history against UAB. He now sits alone in fourth place with 1,503 career points
