BOCA RATON, Fla. – No. 13 Florida Atlantic beach volleyball (5-1) opened its 2023 home slate on Friday, earning a pair of 5-0 sweeps against the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders and the Saint Leo Lions at the FAU Beach Invitational.

Ellie Austin and Christine Jarman got the Sandy Owls started on Friday, finishing first as pair two with a straight-set victory against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Chloe Tome and Kristin Bobay, 21-16, 21-9. The Sandy Owls then took a 2-0 lead after Kate McLaughlin and Courtney Moon earned the Owls second-straight set victory in a 21-16, 22-20 win over TAMCC’s Maria Duda Fernandes de Melo and Hannah Doyle on court four. Emma Grace Robertson and Jillienne Cangelosi clinched the match for the Owls’, earning a 21-15, 21-15 straight-set win against the Islanders’ Jade Bennett and Tori Johnson. Ashleigh Adams and Julie Honzovicova gave the Sandy Owls a four-point advantage after earning a three-set comeback victory against TAMCC’s Giuliana Poletti Corrales and Kiley Lewis as pair one. Alivia Orvieto and Stephanie Young then closed out the match for FAU, earning the Owls’ fourth straight-set victory of the match, defeating the Islanders’ Shea Slusser and Kela Moreno, 21-19, 22-20.

The Sandy Owls then closed the day with their second 5-0 sweep on Friday against the Saint Leo Lions. FAU didn’t lose a single set against Saint Leo, earning five straight-set victories against the Lions. Austin and Jarman set the tone for the Owls, earning a 21-14, 21-14 win against Saint Leo’s Clare Flanagan and Elizabeth Sandoval to get things started on court two. McLaughlin and Moon then earned the Owls second win, securing a 21-8, 21-15 win against SLU’s LeeAnn Potter and Emma Miller on court four. Robertson and Cangelosi clinched the match yet again for the Owls, finishing third with a 21-12, 21-10 win against the Lions’ Kayla David and Julia Panko as pair three. Adams and Honzovicova made it 4-0 for the Sandy Owls, defeating SLU’s Jeanette Henderson and Aliya Fredette-Huffman, 21-8, 21-14. Orvieto and Young then closed out the day for the Owls’ finishing off the 5-0 sweep as they defeated the Lions’ Erin Johnson and Daria Kowalik, 21-15, 21-14.
