MIAMI MARLINS SIGN INFIELDERS YULI GURRIEL AND JOSE IGLESIAS TO MINOR LEAGUE CONTRACTS

Jupiter, Fla. – The Miami Marlins today announced the signings of Cuban infielders Yuli Gurriel and José Iglesias to Minor League contracts.

Gurriel, 38, hit 40 doubles and 8 home runs in 146 games with Houston in 2022 and combined to go 17×49 (.347) with a double, 2 home runs, and 4 RBI in 12 postseason games as he won his second World Series with the Astros. Born in Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, Gurriel owns a career .284 batting avg. and a .776 OPS with 206 doubles, 94 home runs, and 435 RBI in 801 games over seven Major League seasons. He was crowned the American League Batting Champion in 2021 and was the 2021 American League Gold Glove winner at first base, posting a .995 fielding pct. in 142 games at the position.

Iglesias, 33, batted .292 last season with Colorado and ranked third in the National League with his 7.8 AB/SO ratio (56 strikeouts in 439 at-bats), while committing just 8 errors for a .981 fielding pct. in 116 starts at shortstop. Iglesias, also born in Cuba (La Habana), was named a 2015 American League All-Star, and has posted a .279 batting avg. and .982 fielding pct. in 1,096 career games played during parts of 11 Major League seasons with six different organizations: Boston Red Sox (2011-13, 2021), Detroit Tigers (2013-18), Cincinnati Reds (2019) Baltimore Orioles (2020), Los Angeles Angels (2021), and Colorado Rockies (2022).

Both players will join the team today at the Marlins Spring Training facility in Jupiter, Fla.
