OF 2021 MLB FIRST-YEAR PLAYER DRAFT
Marlins Complete 2021 MLB Draft: Selections include 10 pitchers, four infielders, three outfielders and two catchers
MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today completed the 2021 First-Year Player Draft with the club’s final 10 selections in rounds 11-20. Over the past three days, the Marlins drafted 21 players, including using their first seven picks on position players after drafting pitchers with all six selections in 2020. It was the fourth time in Franchise history the Marlins have used at least their first five picks on position players joining 2019, 2018 and 1998.
Miami began the 2021 Draft selecting INF Kahlil Watson with the 16th overall pick and C Joe Mack with the 31st overall. Watson, a shortstop from Wake Forest High School in North Carolina and consensus top 10 prospect, ranked No. 4 by MLB Pipeline, No. 5 by ESPN, No. 6 by Baseball America and No. 7 by The Athletic. Mack, a catcher from Williamsville East High School in New York, was ranked the No. 19 prospect by MLB Pipeline and No. 22 by Baseball America.
The Club’s first selection on day two was INF Cody Morissette from Boston College in the second round (52nd overall). Morissette, 21, earned All-ACC First Team honors in 2021, batting .321 with six home runs and 33 RBI in 41 games. He was named a Collegiate Baseball News All-American in 2020, and selected to the All-ACC Second Team and Freshman Team in 2019. Across his three years at Boston College, Morissette hit .337 in 114 games, with 12 home runs and 85 RBI.
Following seven position players to begin the 2021 Draft, including 2021 SEC Player of the Year OF Tanner Allen from Mississippi State University in the fourth round (118th overall), the Marlins chose RHP Gabe Bierman from Indiana University in the seventh round. Bierman, 21, earned Second-Team All-Big Ten honors in 2021, going 5-4 with 2.68 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 12 starts (one complete game).
Miami opened day three by selecting RHP Jesse Bergin from UCLA in the 11th round (329th overall). MLB Pipeline’s No. 183 draft prospect, Bergin was 15-4 with a 3.91 ERA in three years for the Bruins. He struck out 168 hitters in 168.0 innings.
The Marlins selected six players 6-foot-4 or taller on day three, including pitchers Brandon White from Washington State (12th round, 359 overall) and Holt Jones Jr. from Kentucky (14th round, 419 overall) who stand at 6-foot-8.
